Blond Boy, Georgetown Viaduct

I did some shooting around Georgetown with the Tele-Rollei. After walking around a bit I found myself at the ruins of the viaduct that used to cross the Potomac, just beside Key Bridge. The ruin is covered in graffiti, and is a popular hang-out spot for young folks. I grabbed this shot as the blond boy, one of a trio of European (German?) kids, was leaning over to look at his girlfriend. You can make out some other kids lying down on the wall of the opposite side of the viaduct in the background, and some of the vibrant graffiti.

An interesting picture, but I'd definitely crop the top just above his head. Then do some dodging on the right side and up the contrast.. I think his diagonal would become far stronger and it would be a far better picture. As for your description, it's not relevant to us because it's not really in the shot and adds nothing to the picture. Sometimes although we had something in mind when we shoot something, we have to toss it out once we see the print because it doesn't really present itself, and we need to deal with what is actually there, because your experience, is not our experience given what we're shown. I think it could be a very strong picture.

I see what you mean about the cropping to the diagonal vis-a-vis the overall composition. While I agree with your comment that my experience of taking the image in the end isn't captured by the image itself, I include that HERE because this site is about, in part, sharing the experience of taking pictures. Every image taken and shared is a new learning experience. I'd like to think I'm getting better at street portraiture; I haven't shot much of it so far so I'm always glad to get constructive feedback.

I didn't mean to come off too strong here. When I look at these pictures in the gallery, I just say, "talk to me", and then I write a rather unedited way that I feel about it. Sort of clinical. Sometimes I should go back and soften it a bit. But as to your street photography, this and the bridge picture are VERY strong, and have a rather personal introspective feel to them, which it somewhat different than a "normal" street shot, which is usually more quirky in a way. Probably that's why the photographer was attracted in the first place. But these are "tighter" and more intense.
