Black Canyon

Black Canyon

Still trying to make lemonade out of a lemon. I find this spot difficult to get a decent negative out of. I try at morning, afternoon, sunny, overcast and I can't seem to find what I envision the print to be. This is my latest attempt at lemonade trying a new paper with this scene. Nope, it's still not what I have in mind. Off to the next magic bullet:)
This is the beautiful Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado. I'm still trying to do it justice! I still have to figure out this Lodima stuff. I will keep plugging away:)

Maybe not what you want, but what you have there is very good. Maybe you want something more atmospheric while this image is very interestingly graphic.

Erik, This is very nice. It also scares me, I don't think I could operate a view camera there...

Have you tried Lodima in Amidol? That is the developer used in it's production tests and as such it's basically what the paper was designed for use with. I've been happy with the combo so far.

thanks guys, I love this scene but can't get what I want - yet
Shawn, I have some amidol but haven't used it yet with lodima. I'm a tong man due to allergies and haven't mastered the snatch and waterbath method with my tongs yet:smile: I'll give it a try.
It is a little nerve wracking on the canyon ledge. The spot I'm standing at is 2 empire state buildings deep. I've lost 2 cable releases over the side due to incompetence!

I'm not sure what you envision this scene to be, but atmospheric perspective would go a long way to giving it more depth. That would be far easier to capture if the air were a bit misty, or hazy. Burning the foreground, then, a bit, would bring out the illusion of layers that would enhance that sense of depth. I doubt there's a chemical bullet that will make the magic here no matter how much mystique surrounds it. In any case, using nitrile gloves that you can buy in any chain drug store will allow you to use your hands in the chemical soup magic, or otherwise.

I think it's beautiful!

I find it good as it is. I like the subject, the composition and that the image has an interesting graphic quality.

Please post more of your attempts.

I would reiterate, erik, I agree with Uhner. I like it as is.

I certainly don't mean to suggest that amidol is a magic bullet. I'm also not buying into any kind of mystique. It is, quite simply, impractical to suggest that anything other than amidol (for which the paper was designed from start to finish...) makes the most sense to use, at least as a starting point. Unless, that is, you have personal experience using something else successfully with this paper....

Thanks guys, I'm in a rut with this negative and need to look at it differently. I'll keep plugging away and remove my preconceptions of the scene and print what the neg gives me. I appreciate the comments
