Graham , excellent idea , I think birds have few famous meanings , Picasso , peace and Van gogh said they were death. If we look at it at physics , it can be time , space time ,antigravity.
But I posted 450 pages long my inventions related to boomerangs and I posted many things biology. They give special attention to flexible wings , optimization of a flexing wing , the wing structure and the struts morphology againts the turbulence. I want to say first , when you look 4 birds flying in a row , you can see one birds all serial movements in four. I think they follow each other and timing the flex after following front bird.
