Beer Party

Beer party for the crew of the USS Arthur Middleton--probably Manus Island.

After seeing Wayne's recent pictures, I thought I would post this one. I really like all the characters in the image. The officer in the front is my grandfather (on his 3rd war!)

This image is scanned and cropped from a section of a 3x4 contact print (I assume it was a contact print). I am amazed by the detail. You can't quite make out the writing on the lens on that old speed graphic, but I am pretty sure it says "Graphlex". You can tell that there are individual links on my grandfather's ID bracelet. Try and do that with a 300 DPI print...Especially 60 years later.

Matt

P.s. the careful eye might notice that I have borrowed "Sparks", the photographer.
Location
Manus or Pityili Island
Equipment Used
Probably 3x4 speed graphic
He was in the Mexican border war (had to lie about his age), WWI (Rainbow Division under Col. Douglas MacArther) and WWII (Coast Guard-the only group that would take him since he was too old).

He was gassed in WWI and met my grandmother while recouperating.

Of course, after seeing active combat in 3 wars, he was driven of a pier while working on reconstruction in Japan.
