Is the head that soft (compared to the rest of the image) in the print, or is that a result of scanning? It almost looks like the head was in motion during your shot.
 
Heh, no, in the print/negative. (Actually, the tree roots are also soft, but it's not quite so obvious - I took this one more or less wide open.) I have another shot with everything in focus but to be honest I don't like it so much - it's very hard to make anything 'interesting' out of such a touristy photo (particularly when you're under orders only to photograph from certain angles to avoid disrespecting the Buddha (!)), and I rather like the way the Buddha's head looks slightly ethereal compared to the rest of the tree in this one.
