I prefer version 2. More of the foreground in version 1 does not add value to the image but in this version the more of the sky does. I also like the one person standing between the two signs. Its nice to find all the different patterns in the image.
I prefer the first one. The additional foreground gives it more depth and the group of people is well-placed at the end of the groyne. I feel that the eye is led out of the image by the sand & tide lines at the bottom right of this one - it would be better if the lower groyne were closer to the bottom of the shot. I agree about the patterns and textures, though - very nice!
My vote's for version 2 for the reasons already outlined. I know this stretch of coast well as I have friends in Thorpe Bay and South Benfleet. You've really captured the cold, shallow sand / mudflats this time of year.
I, too prefer the 2nd version. The low horrizon gives a wonderful sense of space. This brings back happy memories as I occasionally used to work at Southend and went down to the beach at lunchtimes - usually in winter!
Great shot. And for what it's worth I prefer the first one. I like the empty foreground. It places the group in an empty beach, the group is stronger to. All in all the first one is stronger fro me.
