I had read of someone doing semi-stand in HC-110 'cause they found Rodinal grainy. I notice this is small format & if there's grain - I sure don't notice. Are there any conditions that make you choose stand vs semi?
On some films you can get Bromide Drag on the edges of the film which is an uneven development, which looks like slight density changes on the edge when you use certain films, especially 35mm. Semi-Stand Fixes that. At the 1/2 way point in the development you give the container a couple turns and smack it a couple times to make sure there are no bubbles. Using Rodinal in low concentrations has been fun, because you dont even really have to be concerned with temperature. My normal development time is 60 min, but if I'm out mowing the grass and forget ) nothing is harmed, and its probably even better. My Hewes brand steel reel and container is 400 ml. So i just use 4ml of Rodinal and 396ml of charcoal filtered house water. At first when I tried it, and was like, "this aint going to work", but after stop, fix, hypo, and rinse, you realize that developing any other way is kind of ridiculous. Ther than pushing or pulling film for effect, Stand Development is economical, easy, and if you are super busy in your life at home or work multi tasking, then you can pretty much, set it and forget it. The developer fully exhausts after 2 hours so theoretically you could probably leave it overnight if you had to. I might have to try that for fun. Anyway, i mostly use Fuji Acros Neopan 100 for stand development. Its great film and its not too expensive and gives great results.
Greg, Thank You! I have mostly HP5 to work w/, but my first nervous attempts at semi stand have been wonderful. It does something unnatural to the appearance of metal, but I really like the affect. It was done w/ HC-110 1:150 for 55 min, w/ I believe 30s initial agitation, and a single inversion & bubble smack at 20 min. One link from the Mr. Leica site is listed 'cause he thought it was a good primer on stand. There, he claims push/pull can be done on the same roll. That would be rather revolutionary, if true.
I will have to try out some HC-110 at those dilutions. I know some people do mix developers but I have not done that yet. I have made my own Rodinal, PaRodinal and use it on occasion. http://www.digitaltruth.com/data.php
