Were you as close to both as you appear to be, Peter? For a moment, at least, Alyssa seems completely unaware of the photographer's presence. Based on my granddaughter's behaviour at that age kids have this amazing ability to not being distracted when something takes their attention. I could get disconcertingly "blocked" on those occasions. It was a one way street - when she needed my attention there was no question of my being allowed to block her :D

On a technical basis the DoF seems to be incredibly small. The person whom I assume to be Grandma has her hand slightly out of focus and yet Alyssa's face and hair is sharp but the depth of field between Grandma's hand and Alyssa's face must be only a couple of inches. Not much for error here

User, thank you. Yes, it was that close, about 3 feet. I think it was f/8, so depth of field was about a foot in front and back.

Thanks It goes to show that a 2D photograph can be misleading. If someone had asked me to estimate how in front of Alyssa's face Grandma's hand was in terms of a plane of focus I'd have said nor more maybe 6 inches.

There's a real photographic diary there for Alyssa in the years to come

@pentaxuser
Oops, the chart I was looking at was in meters, not feet! You're right, the depth would have been about 6 inches.

Thanks. That's still tight though. I'd have been so nervous about getting such a small DoF right that I'd have had a measuring tape almost touching Alyssa's nose. Good job it wasn't me taking the picture. :D

Haha. The C33 has a very clear focusing screen. When I first bought it I didn't know that the screen mounting pad had disintegrated so this shot would not have worked - focusing on Alyssa's face would mean Gramma's hand would have been in focus instead. Since the repair, it has performed flawlessly.
