Sometimes even work in the Critque Gallery does not get comments so do not be discouraged...however what you did by letting everyone know is one way to get some attention to a specific image.
As to this image...it seems like there is too much contrast, at least on my monitor, just black and white - which may be what you wanted, which means we have different taste. I would like to see a bit more detail in the face of the fighter that is down...but again, just my thoughts. Hopefully others will add their thoughts.
Wow... Let me give this a try. I am a boxing fan and a photographer; although I am by no means a photojournalist. As stated above, the contrast just doesn't help this picture, and I belive that it takes away from the story thay you are trying to tell. I am sure that you belived that you had a winner from an abstract point of view because you caught the dominating fighter's large muscular calf which, in this picture, should create an air of domination. However, to me as a viewer, I find it to be a tremendous obstruction. In other words, it blocks the entire story from being told. There is a great picture of Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston (can easily be found on a google or yahoo search) that is the ultimate in story telling of a fight. The major problem here is the contrast and a sub-optimal angle which prevents the entire story from being told. That's my opinon.
I'm still learning and it is hard to not have much contrast at these venues. We are not talking ESPN shows, but regional, smaller events where the lighting doesn't help a bit. I know I need faster lenses, but I'm waiting until I become more experienced to invest a large amount of money in equipment.
The contrast is also because of the scanning, the print isn't as contrasty as the scanned image. Need to improve my Photoshop knowledge to fix this contrast issue.
The leg "obstruction" is understandable, but believe me that the galery director of where I take classes chose this picture to be on a show.
Thanks for your feedback, any comment is very much appreciated.
I am glad that your photo was chosen by the gallery director. Keep trying and keep looking at other photojournalist's approach at boxing matches. Evey ringside photo shoot is absolute caos. The great ones somehow manage to get the shot. You may want to look up on the web some of the guys that covered boxing and find out "their tricks of the trade"... good luck!
