All American Man

Here's a fun one worth sharing. This pictograph is tucked into a minor cave about 15 feet off of the canyon floor in Salt Creek, Canyonlands NP. About a 15 mile or so hike.

This was the first trip I took on my soon-to-be girlfriend (still with me) and things went sideways. 75 degrees the first day, absolutely beautiful, but by the time we reached this panel, a storm began moving in. I forgot the Mamiya's viewfinder so I had to guess. The lighting was perfect, so I spanned the little slot in the cave with the tripod legs and prayed. The storm filtered the light just right and after only 2 shots, we packed up and headed towards our camp. It rained, it snowed, it rained again, then froze over. Our tent leaked. It flash flooded. We were stuck for 2 days in mud and ice waiting for things to clear. Finally, we hiked out completely soaked only to climb the cliff out (1500ft) to find her car covered in 6" of snow. The road is adobe mud covered in snow along a cliff edge for 15 miles. Got us out alive, but busted the steering rack in her WRX wagon. Heh.

She's still here and the image, to me, is the best All American Man image I have yet to find. David Muench is a close.

1. Great shot! 2. You might like "House of Rain" by Chris Childs(?) 3. I think you meant 'with' your girlfriend. s-a

Yup, House of Rain is a great book and I ran into him once in the backcountry. Super down to earth guy, unlike some of the other folks I find doing this type of work (hint, name rhymes with hill).

Great shot! Do you know how old the petroglyph is? Is it 19th century or is it modern?
This Pictograph is about 1200 years old. It pre-dates anything "American" significantly, but it earned that title accordingly as one can easily see. Total size is about 3.5ft tall as you can judge by the hand prints to the left. The white outline you see is remnant from the early years of archaeology where they would outline these panels with chalks in order to get better shape definition with their BW photos. EDIT: my friend is telling me 900 years old, but we're not exactly sure.

WOW incredible color here, ah Velvia50... ah Mamiya, AH 43mm ... just got my viewfinder so I've been guessing all along, it's not too hard you just look past the outline that exists in the in-camera viewfinder about as far as you can see, and that's the edge... LOL, it's sad that they "defaced" this in white chalk, it look really amazing though, glad you got out alive, glad after that she stuck around haha.

You said the light was perfect, so you mean natural light? so you used the in camera meter or handheld spot?

Natural light that filtered through the oncoming viga rain. I believe it was 2.5 stops below sunny 16. Used the in camera meter and my gut on that one.
