This year marks the tricenetary of the birth of Adam Smith. He was born in 1723 in Kirkcaldy and was baptised in the Old Kirk in Kirkcaldy in June 1723. The Old Kirk church tower is 16th century.
Thanks for this picture which led me to read more about Adam Smith in Wikipedia. He writes down about "Sympathy" as under rubric of "The Theory of Moral Sentiments": "As we have no immediate experience of what other men feel, we can form no idea of the manner in which they are affected, but by conceiving what we ourselves should feel in the like situation."
Relating to Adam Smith's article, the man in your picture easily evokes the feelings of sympathy however without any clue of any idea what he thinks or what disturbs him.
I needed to relate this article with this picture.
By the way, I liked your photo.
The young man in the photograph was staring into space long after I pressed the shutter. I would like to know his story but of course that isn't possible. Maybe I should have made the effort to engage him in conversation. Maybe he wouldn't have welcomed the opportunity. Whenever I think of Adam Smith I think of the Scottish Reformation, the effects of which rumble on into the 21st Century.
