Back in the 90's no one would pay any attention to me my gear, a 100-300mm f/4. After a good friend of mine let me borrow his Minolta 600mm f/4 the attention was a bit much & distracting.

Not so long ago you would of seen people using handlines and locally made rods and reels, now its all Daiwa and Shimano etc... still catching the same amount of fish.

As a child, shortly after we came from Cuba I remember fishing off the Key Biscayne bridge with a Cuban Yo-Yo (plastic hand reel) with my dad.
