Chris Barber and Monty Sunshine were the more restrained jazzmen and Monty was much under-rated on the clarinet, I felt, compared to Acker who made the charts in the early 60s via "Stranger on the Shore " and the BBC Sunday evening children's serial where it was usedThese take me back to my school-days of the early 60s when jazz was just about tolerated by the Headmaster but not Rock 'n Roll. Great daysThanks
Thanks Folks !! Well I saw George Melly at the 100 Club too but I cannot find any photos of him at the moment -- he used to wear a striped shirt I remember ! At the Richmond Jazz Festival they announced a 'New Band' called the 'Rolling Stones' and when they came on I thought they were rubbish as i liked the 'TRAD Jazz' and I came out of the tent without taking any photos !! I have some more pics of 'Jazz Fans' dressed up in Ilford, Essex when there used to be big Jazz events at Ilford Town Hall -- I will upload some for you to see --
Mick Mulligan played at Cooks Ferry Inn. I never went to any concerts at Ilford although I lived just down the road in Wanstead. National Service and going abroad disrupted my listening. I was a member of the London Jazz Club and also went to the crypt of a church near Marble Arch when Humphrey Lyttelton formed his club and the LJC moved.
I had a COLOUR print of Humphrey Littelton as a 16x12" enlargement but it was on the older 'EP2' chemistry and faded and I dumped it after being nagged by Wife to clear out lots of my photos in the garage.
