I grew up a few miles from here and always wondered just how Schoolcraft decided this was the beginning of the river. There are dozens of creeks arising from lakes in the area, any one of which would be it. The outlet from the lake used to move around a lot until the Dept of Natural Resources built up the surrounding shore line, forcing it to stay in one place where they could put the rocks.
This series has nicely caught the light of the place.
We were taught in school that he thought to call it Veritas Caput, Latin for True Head but cut off the beginning and ending syllables to make Itasca. The Anishinaabe called it Elk Lake.
