Let's Talk about Color
June 13th 2009 Newport Visual Art Center, Oregon $75

Color photography. It is the most common medium in our visual language. Our eyes and our minds react to color. Color is used in almost everything we see in our visual world. Christopher Burkett shared, “Through many hours of patient work, the photograph becomes more refined, as I labor to bring the luminous quality of the image to life. These are not mechanical reproductions, but images in which I have invested my heart and soul. I love it!” I hope to instill in you a love for color photography!

During this 1-day workshop, I’ll give you some homework before we meet and then we’ll look at and discuss work of past and current photographers who apply their vision in color. I’ll also bring samples of hand colored images that are of Oregon Crater Lake. Finally, we will share and discuss your work. Try to hone our skills together.

We will go out and apply what we have learned and shared together. I will bring my camera with Fuji FP-100c film (A type of Polaroid) and do some demonstrations of how I operate. But, I want you to go out and photograph and then we'll share the results via emails afterwards.

A little about me:
I have been working with color photography for over 30 years. I first got into color by working at two commercial labs. One in the S.F. Bay Area and the other was in Portland, Oregon.
I love color photography. Its taken me sometime to understand why but I do love it. I have done years and years of black and white photography and I also love it was well. But, Color has a special place in my soul. I can see color and contrasts better then I can see tones and shades for black and white.

Sounds like an excellent workshop! One of the rarest things in color photography is finding someone who does not just photograph color, but actually uses color effectively as part of the composition to take the viewer past the representational aspect of photography. Hope that made sense!

Good morning, Robert;

While we have not heard very much recently from Denise about her co-ordinating work with the new Newport Visual Arts Center director, from your message perhaps we can assume that her efforts indeed have been fruitful. Perhaps there is also hope for the NVAC long languishing dark room.

I would like to attend your color workshop. At this time, I do not recall any scheduling conflicts for that weekend. (Now how did that happen?) The other weekends in June already have something scheduled for me.

Enjoy;

Ralph of Latte land,

There has been quite a bit of behind-the-scenes activity, schedules being drawn up, et al. Yes, the darkroom at NVAC is no longer languishing in the light. I am planning on teaching a weekend Carbon printing workshop in November, for example. Both darkroom-based workshops and non-darkroom-based workshops are in the pipeline. Quite exciting stuff! Kudos to Denise for spearheading this adventure!

Hi Ralph and All,

It has been a long time since I've been to APUG. Between work and the Newport Photography Workshops organization, time seems to disappear.

Robert and Vaughn (and the others involved) have all done a great job of helping get this thing kick-started. It's shaping up beautifully. Robert is our hero for volunteering to be the first at bat. I hope everyone in the area will think seriously about signing up for his class. It looks like it will be a very worthwhile and enjoyable day. Thanks, Robert!

Great progress, Denise.
Hope Robert gets his class filled. Color should be a good first topic.

So far I have three people interested but I welcome as many as possible. I'm working on the syllabus right now. I'm also talking to color photographers I know and getting their thoughts and ideas on the subject.
Ralph, contact me asap.

Hi All,

Can I encourage everyone to announce Robert's workshop (and the ones to follow) to whatever other photo groups you belong to?

Peace, joy, and a good camera!

I bumped Roberts post earlier - he'd been languishing at 43 views forever. He's now at 49.

Lets hope he realizes that having someone other than the OP as the last respondent seems to result in more hits. If he does, he'll won't do the usual "he must be last reponder posted" ....and if he does maybe one of you will post again to give him a little more push.

It would be bad to fail to get enough response for the first of these....
