Photrio Photographic Arts Standards

Since this is awakening...

I would like to propose a format for tagging. There is value for the tagging to be consistent with tagging in social media, so starting with the "#" symbol makes sense. We could recognize existing standards and create APUG standards. Or would it be Photrio standards?

#[APUG: <tag1>, <tag2>, <tag3>...; <note>] or #[PHOTRIO: <tag1>, <tag2>, <tag3>...; <note>]

The "APUG" or "PHOTRIO" could have a link back to the standards descriptions. Each standard could have an optional link back its specific description.

tags could be general "f64", "dgitial f64 analogy", "digital, analogous to darkroom printing", "SOOC jpeg"., etc.
They could be more specific: "platinum print', "HDR", "silver gelatin, scanned", etc.

Description: #[PHOTRIO: monochrome silver gelatin print; DR], (DR = digital representaiton)

Example description. Could be more detailed or kept simple. Could have simple introduction, but lead to other texts with much more detail where warranted.

Monochrome Silver Gelatin Print

An image produced by enlarging (alternate tags <negative optical enlarger>, <condensing enlarger>, <optical diuffusion enlarger>, <scanning laser enlarger>, a negative (alternative tags <inter-negative>) or digital file (consider using alternate tag <scanning laser enlarger>) onto silver gelatin material as understood in analog photography since the 19th century. Related tags: <realted tag1>, <related tag2>,...

Question: APUG or PHOTRIO?

Thoughts on general format of tags?

When you upload media, there are already boxes to fill, perhaps "drop-downs" could be added to these and maybe add some more

faberry man has noted that "Monochrome Silver Gelatin Print" needs to include contact printing.

Sean seems open to incorporating the standards into the gallery.

Let's play Name that tag: (start high level)

<silver gelatin print>
<platinum print>
<palladium process>
<inkjet print>
<digital image>
<dry plate image>
<reversal image>

I think the "standards" could be a page behind a control panel.
Maybe Wikipedia-like or actual Wikipedia real page, where people can add their own tags.

"Burkograph" a silver gelatin enlargement on 11x14 fiber based paper processed in 1:2 Dektol for 3 minutes fixed in fresh fixer and (probably toned with KRST 1:20) with wide margins from full frame black and white film negative in filed carrier (showing file marks that can be traced to specific equipment and possible date of print) created in camera and developed in D-76 1:1 for a time appropriate to subject luminance range and rendering intent, the subject of which conveys or is supported by a personal narrative.

maybe we should just say "process" instead of "print"? Then follow with "print" as a separate tag? I.e., it could be a negative scanned and digitally reversed for instance.

http://www.alternativephotography.com/processes/

<carbon process>
<gum bichromate>
<Kallitype process> <Van Dyke process>
<Lith priocess>
<instand prints> althernative <Polaroid>, <Fuji Instax>
<wetplate collodion process>

etc.

Interesting thought. Customized or personalized tags. They should be designated as such. Maybe [Photrio (personalized): Burkograph].

Editing not functioning here, but add to above: Custom tags should incorporate standard tags as much as possible and meaningful.

One distinction I'd like to make is whether the target print is the final (as in mounted gallery print) or is intermediate for further production (as in Ansel Adams prints made with lower contrast to be used as the original copy for his books).

These days, I see a lot of people working in tintypes for example, and these tintypes are put into books. What is available for purchase/collection is not necessarily the tintype itself, but is the print from a process that started with the tintype.

Right, I mentioned thee idea of "digital representation" as suggested on the discussion thread, but we could add "Offset Printed representation", "Gravure printed representation", etc. These may get less used. If they are scanned they can use the printing tag + <scanned" or "DR" (digital representation.

Hopefully they appear as buttons with [x] in the corresponding field where they are selected. Not sure about <tag> formats but certainly like picking things

Having done my taxes, I was thinking the process might be that you are asked a series of questions... Did you stage the photograph or find it. Did you plan to be there at a place and time or did you happen to be there. Did you know the people in the photograph. Did you use digital camera to scout the scene before shooting on film... the questions could go on and on.

Maybe an indication of whether the image is core work, or a new direction or departure from the main body of work by the photographer. How close to the usual work or how far, is it likely to cause someone to cut a corner off their f/64 membership card.
