safe light strategies?

Currently using a homemade red LED as a safelight. Added additional red filter and positioned the lamp to reflect away from enlarger. Prints have improved. A textbook suggests using an amber filter. Yellow filters are also used. How and what does a person decide for a safelight strategy in the darkroom?

Hello. Just saw your question.
I am fortunate to still have Kodak OC (amber) lights, but had asked a while ago over at largeformatphotography.info about amber LEDs, since I find red light less comfortable. The maker of the darkroom-popular bright red LEDs apparently also makes amber ones that some have tested as safe in their darkrooms. you might wish to give some of them a trial run.
