Right after 9/11, police throughout America thought they were stopping the next terrorist attack, and taking photographs of public buildings was an open invitation to being harassed by well meaning, but terribly ignorant, law enforcement. It's gotten better, but you still run into people who think you must be up to something if you're taking photographs.

its not just the police who are like that. there are a lot of overly zealous obnoxious people and some have cameras.

Doing landscape with C220 on tripod. A group passing by is attracted by the TLR (I understand that the TLR form is popular with onlookers). Asks couple questions. I invite them to look into the WLF.
"Oooh it's in color!"
And then I give them the second half: "You're lucky I'm shooting colour film today. If it was black and white the view would look nowhere near as pretty."

That would go over most people's heads. When I told them I am using a slow film, I tell them to move slower and they do!

A few years back I was on vacation and had picked up a Kodak Bullet camera (in the box with label) at a junk shop. I was stopped by the TSA agent on my return flight, who let me go as long as I agreed with him that it was a toy car. Surreal.

I'm getting asked "is it a film camera", even if it is not. I think, young ones look at older people with cameras as film users...

I can't say for sure if this is the case, but if hipsters have been helping keep the film factories running (even if via lomography) then any questions they have are a-ok with me.

Vinyl presses too.

It’s fine with me too. Keeping technologies alive.

When they give you the finger (sic), take the whole arm.
In the gentlest, nicest way of course.
Give them a surprise lecture. If they don’t like it, so be it.
If they do, you just made Kodak/Ilford/Fuji/Adox/Tetenal etc. a new customer.

I have a few older cars and my daily driver is a 1983 Volvo 240 wagon. I had it in a local car show and it drew lots of attention from the hipster types, They especially like that mine has the 3rd seat in the rear.

1990 Toyota wagon. Hipsters love the tape deck.

I drive it because it's what I can afford, it happens to have hipster cred. Not my problem.

There is an 1980s Volvo wagon here that the young owner has modded. Matte white paint, tinted window, lowered, cool rims, blacked out trim. It looks really good! I hope it runs as good as it looks...

Funny, when I bought all my vehicles they were just old and at the bottom of their depreciation cycle. Now they're considered "vintage", rare and going up in value. People approach me at gas stations asking if I want to sell them.

Can someone please supply a working definition of ‘hipster’?

And they've been milking that cow for 20 years.

One of my step-sons is a hipster. He likes vintage 35mm cameras, record albums, vintage clothes, shoes and watches. He loves to visit record stores and thrift stores.

The only thing that bothers me is that he likes to over expose his photographs. My daughter told me it was a "hipster" thing.
