Welcome aboard Matt. Ole covered the first question, I'll tackle the next four.

Colour? Black and white? Both? Other?

And what about gear? 35 mm, mf or lf? Older cameras and lenses or newer things?

[If you don't love old lenses or ULF now, you will in a couple of months, I tell ya! Better beware, this is a dangerous place.]

Welcome. When stuck in a 'discussion' with a digiphile a good thing to say is, "I tried digital, I've now moved on to film."
Welcome to APUG!

Look at his profile to the left
I have been here for a year and I am not into ULF or old lenses. The LF bug seem to have caught up with me finally though

Nononononono!!!

Go back to where you came from, you'll get involved in big cameras soon, spend too much money, ignoring wife and kids...

Your life will become a mess. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Welcome.

Well, Søren, what can I say? That you have a long incubation time? Don't worry, now that you are infected, you'll start to have urgencies in other directions as well, driving you in the hands of folks like Jim Galli. You'll think things like 'barrel lenses, hmm, those look sexy', '8x10" sheets are not at all expensive if I develop them myself' or 'if I'm using a large camera, why not use a really large one?'

:D :D :D Norm

Ouch youre right: I can feel the urge now and what was it, 4X5 looks small
What is the next step up from 8X10 ?
Darned, now I'm really infected, please don't offer me any old lenses, I might take them "against gearheadednes 1 three times a day"
Regards Søren

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Wow what a lot of replies!

In answer to some of the questions ( I will be sorting out my profile soon)

- I come to stills in the last 5 years having been heavily (and still am) into cinematography. I shoot a lot of super8 and 16mm.

- I use 35mm (Nikon FE2) and Medium Format (Hasselblad 500C/M)

- I am heavily into colour reversal film (although I prefer, on the whole negative for cinematography as it suits my work flow)

- I particularly like shooting landscapes and travel shots, and for this I find that Fuji Velvia is my favourite emulsion. I do however LOVE Kodachrome, although I think its days are numbered unfortunately.

- Recently however I read Ansel Adams book "The Negative", then bought "The Camera" and "The Print" realised that infact Black and White was something I really wanted to shoot a lot of (before I was not really into it at all, especially for landscapes) so I just set up a darkroom in my attic and am really enjoying this.

- I am based in the UK in Birmingham, which is the second largest city and positioned pretty much right in the middle of the country.

So that is a breif run down!

Tell your pixalated friends that photography is like a religion, A little knowledge leads to digital, a little more leads you back to film. Welcome here,

Same over here -- last Tuesday, after a lot of reading in other boards, I found the APUG site and immediately registered.

Sure, some of the people here are insane, I mean, they use film the size of an average print, but I think they are good at heart

No--there are people here who use negatives larger than the average print.

I think they are silly.

Then again, I used to think that 8x10 was silly...

Welcome Matt on APUG. Here is a lot of knowledge concentrated. If you can not find an anwer on your questions on APUG, it will be difficult, let's say, almost impossible to find a realistic solution............
