Any ideas on what its original use might have been, or what it was attached to?

U2 spy plane. My grandfather was Kelly Johnson's radar black box guy. I still have his U2 coffee cup from the skunk works. Notice also that this seller is willing to ship this anywhere in USA for $22 bucks. Bravo to him.

I'm tired of burning ants. I want to get on the roof and set the neighbors dog on fire. Gotta have this!

Jim,

Stop doing that. It's 12:36 AM and I think that I'm going to die laughing in my underwear. Seriously I'm laughing too hard to breath and my eyes are watering.

What a monster! I'd be afraid to ask what a filter would cost for that baby

I wouldn't have known about the U2 but I was going to say aerial recon cameras. I'll send to a buddy that used to fly on a C-130 recon plane and see if he recognizes it.

what bugs me about auctions like this is "i do not use the checkout feature of ebay". this is to avoid ebay seller fees, right? slimy. it's a shame ebay doesnt weed these guys out.. they state it plainly in their auctions!

i digress.

that lens is CRAZY.

The ebay check out system, has nothing to do with avoiding fee's, you pay the fee's even if you don't use the checkout system, you pay the listings fee's, and then when the auction ends you pay the final value fee.

I sell hundreds of screens as well as other photographic items every month on ebay and I don't use the check out system and many sellers don't use it for one reason or another.

Don't condem sellers, because they choose not to use the technology that is offered by ebay, and sometimes does not work with the systems they are running.

Oh yeah- I saw this & instantly put it on my watch list... like I NEED another big-assed lens laying around that I don't know what to do with.

One thing that this might work for is a camera obscura tent/room. I picked up a 4 pound B&L 20" Anagstigmat Telephoto last year, and still haven't done anything with it.

This 18 pounder would need to be treated with respect!

No camera that could handle it here, so I'll pass.

The eBay checkout system is an annoyance. I prefer sellers who just use regular e-mail. I do my e-mail in Pine, and would rather not have to weed through all the HTML tags to find out what the actual message is.

Damn! I want this...but my C1 doesn't have the bellows for it. But...and extension lens board...yeah...this could work...I could hang it about eight inches out in front of the front standard and focus down to about 15 feet...yeah...I need this...I need this lens...

SOMEBODY STOP ME!!!

I think it might be a telephoto design. If it is, your C1 just MIGHT work...

You'll just need a tripod made from old telephone poles!

hehehe

spy plane lens

I bought one of these lenses 20 years ago.... it was made for aerial recon. and is for 18x9 inch format, giving a stereo pair on 9 inch rollfilm, the stereo effect makes it easier to guage the information I beleive.
I have used the lens in a number of ways. I made a tube to fit on the back to which I attached my Rollie SL66... the SL66 has built in bellows so this made it easy to focus. A massive tripod is necessary, I used a large Linhof twin shank tripod.I got some very sharp pictures with it, the lens is great used wide open.
I have also used it on 10x8 .... I mounted the lens on one tripod and the camera on another and made a lensboard with a leather tube glued to it that fitted on the back of the lens.... a bit of a hassle to use , but good results were obtained.Ive also used the lens as a telescope.
I think these days with the surplus of repro camera lenses that are now on the market that you`d be better of buying an Apo Nikkor, Artar, or Apo Ronar as they weigh a fraction of the aerial lens.
