Wide-angle lens for 11x14??

Looking for advice for "wide-angle" lenses suitable for use on 11x14 camera. Older, more economical choices preferred. Wider than 300mm.

This thread on lenses for 7x17 has 95 posts including several lists ranging from budget to very high. Any lens listed will give you lots of movement.

I have a few choices here. Some only barely cover you might want to check up on these but if memory serves me here is what i can add:

Rodnestock Apo Gerogon-S f11 270mm (just covers no moves)
Rodenstock Apo Graphigon f11 240mm (just covers no moves)
Wollensak Series IIIa f12.5 EX WA 10x12 200mm (covers w/ small stops)
Emil Busch Wide Angle Aplanat no 3 series C 190mm (very small stops maybe)
Orion 3a 200mm russian metrogon type thing (just covers)

if you can find the above they will run less than the modern options and the protars iv and v.

210mm f:6.8 Schneider Angulon. Slightly soft in the corners on 12x16", really intended for 24x30cm (9.5x12"), but is quite usable. Mine is a pre-WWII uncoated version - and it does make a little bit of difference.

The Hexanon GRII 260mm is a good economical choice as well I forgot about that one. It would cover 11x14 with not alot of movements.

If you really need more economical choices there are a large number of 300mm lenses that easily cover 11x14 with movements. Once you get under 300mm and want movements you get into more pricey lenses for the most part.

If you really need more economical choices there are a large number of 300mm lenses that easily cover 11x14 with movements. Once you get under 300mm and want movements you get into more pricey lenses for the most part.

You might look for a 240mm Kowa Graphic. A small percentage of Kowa Graphic lenses of this focul length are similar in design to the 240mm Computar, which will cover 11X14 with a couple of inches of movement.

Even if the 240mm Kowa Graphic does not cover 11X14 it will still have great coverage, about the same as a G-Claron, with similar performance. And if you find one in barrel it will likely screw directly into a Copal 3.

If so, this lens is a real sleeper, at least to me.

I've had 3-4 of the 213 repromasters and they all just missed 11x14 coverage at infinity. They do cover 10x12 in my experience. Removal of any lens spacers might make up for the small difference but who knows.

A search on the Repromaster indicates that it does not cover normally, although there is one for sale on EBAY which the seller states does cover 11x14.
I have a 240 Computar which covers very well, and is a great lens.
I have a question for Sandy, since you know a lot about the computars; if I had a front element from a 210 Computar, could I use it on my 240mm Computar, and would this then give me approximatley a 225mm lens that would still cover 11x14? Thanks for your help,

I don't believe you can interchange the elements. The 210 Computar fits in a Copal 1, the 240 goes into a Copal 3.

A 305 Computar will work with loads of movement if you don't mind being a smudge over 300mm. A 305 Claron is worth a look on the less expensive end but has less movement, I have a Claron I'm not using since I got the Computar, PM if you're interested.

I never used it at absolute infinity, it's not my style of photography with wide lenses, but only for photographing walls at max. 30 meters distance.

Last weekend, I took the time to check the lens and got very clear lack of coverage (about 1cm in the corners on 7x17) at infinity but it does cover at closer range.

On the other hand you could probably interchange the elements on the 305mm Computar and 270mm Computar and get a 285 Computar that would cover 12X20 with an inch or so of movements. The 270 just hits as is so adding 15mm would likely provide some excess of coverage.

The elements of the 270mm and 305 Computars interchange in a Copal 3.

This is a can of worms. All shutters that I have seen labeled as Copal 3s are alike. However, some shutters labeled as Copal 3 have the same screw in thread as Copal 3s, while other shutters labeled as Copal 3 have a different screw in thread.

Most Kowa and Computars (but not all) fit directly into all shutters labeled as Copal 3s, but may also fit into some shutters labeled as Copal 3.

There must be someone who can explain this, but I am not the one.
