Wide Angle 4.5 Lens Question

Currently I have a Schneider 90mm/5.6 SA for my Technika. I'm happy enough with that, and I have a 58mm Schnieder XL too; so I'm looking at an 'in between' F.L.

Considering a few, wondering if y'all had some thoughts, opinions, etc.

75mm/4.5 Linhof Biogon
75mm/5.6 Linhof Super Angulon
Other options in that F.L.?

The 80mm SS-XL is an excellent lens.

Dear Robb,

Biogons offer wonderfully low distortion but much smaller coverage than SAs of the same f.l.

I believe there's a 72 SA, but I may be mistaken. Maybe it's an Apo-Grandagon. It'll not take long to find out.

Half a stop slower than the SA, but a fair bit lighter, I have a Rodenstock Grandagon 75mm f6.8 that I like very much. Lots of coverage (187mm quoted - enough for 6x17), fits a Copal 0 and is quite compact - takes 58mm filters. Very sharp. Worth a look if you don't have to have f5.6.

I happened to have Schneider Kreuznach's site open in another window, so it took me no time at all to find out: Schneider 72mm f:5.6 Super Angulon XL is the one you were thinking of.

I have the 72xl lens and it was my main lens for interiors, but its huge and expensive. For my use it was great and has massive movements and does 5x7 in a pinch however I used a center filter for transparencies even on 4x5.

If I had to buy one today I would probably buy the fuji 75mm swd over all the others.

80mm ssxl is also a great lens but closer to the 90mm that you already have.

I presume you have the centre filter for the 58XL? If so, then the 80XL makes sense as it utilises the same filter.

The 72XL uses a different c.f. The S-A 75 needs a c.f if using tranny film - as does the 80XL (and 110XL - although its coverage so big, largely academic).

I've just done a similar lens shuffle and ended up with an all XL set-up 58, 80 and 110. Having had S-A 75, S-A 90 f5.6 and APO-Symmar 120. The 80 and 110 weigh far less than the 75+90 let alone the 120.

No issues with sharpness etc on any of the lenses, all far better than we realistically need for most images.
