why so few images inpersonal galleries

g'day
i'm new here, great forums and interesting discussions, but why so few images

when reading interesting threads, and especially the over opinionated posts, i like to check out the poster's images and i am more often than not surprised that the photographer has no images on display

why?

talk is cheap but are we not visual artists/communicators

seeing what you can do is, to me, far more important than what you can say

hi Ray, and welcome.

In my opinion the main attraction of APUG is not the galleries, but the very informative forums.
The galleries are open to subscribers only, that's one of the reasons why the regular members don't have any images in the galleries.

Besides that, APUG is not just the post-your-daily-snapshot-here website.
Those who post images are mostly seeking for an honest critique and tips.

Welcome to APUG Ray!

As Nige said, posting images is not a high priority for many. I think this may be because a computer screen is no substitute for an actual print. I have images in my gallery, but they do not compare with the prints they were scanned from.
Plus I think APUG, although it has galleries, is more forum oriented. For myself I look in the galleries maybe once a week, I can't speak for others.

Like some here I find it hard to get into the digital work needed to put images online. A great way to see the work of others is the various print exchanges. Sign up when the next round starts.

Join the print exchanges, postcard exchange, and traveling portfolio. That's where the real images are.

Also, a number of APUG participants have their own websites, so click on their names or avatars and see if they have a website address or link in their profile.

I agree with David. A print in hand is the only way to really see another's work. The print exchanges that go on here are wonderful.

Some of us don't have scanners & don't want to get one. Some, like me, have one, but don't know how to get the best out of it & really couldn't care less about figuring it out. I'm always leary about putting scans of prints in my gallery because the online quality is always very disappointing.

Oh yeah, where are yours?

Can you think of any good reasons we don't all post a lot of images,
other than, of course, we really suck ?

I bet you can do it if you really try.

I have lots of images that I can't post. I'm an old dog and luddite. I don't have a scanner and am rather computer illiterate. I do exchange prints. I would show prints anytime if we should meet.

Indeed - the main reason I have posted a few scans of my prints is for that very reason: so people can see what I do. If they elicit any considered comments on how I could perhaps improve them, that is a bonus (and on at least one occasion such suggestions have added to my arsenal of tricks).

However, as already mentioned by others, there are a multitude of reasons why people do not post images. No conclusions should be drawn from the fact.

I have yet to produce a scan of any of my photos that doesn't look really bad once on the site.

Getting a new scanner in the near future - so we'll see. Current scanner is coal fired.

HI Ray. Good question. I think most here see this a primarily a discussion forum, and as some have pointed out, they are struggling with the process of getting image up, for various reasons. I would post more myself, but I have maxed out the disk space I am allowed, and I am not wanting to remove some of my images just yet.

I agree, "Post more images" There is a lot of knowledge here but a fear to show. I don't understand it. We are a visual medium after all. So proof is in the print/image !.

Yes, please post more pics. After all a picture is worth 10,000 words and tells a lot about what the photographer is all about. In my opinion the image is what is important, not technical print perfection.

I really enjoy the galleries here. Even if the scans are not top notch (most actually are), it's interesting to see what interests other members photographically. Some have pretty unique visions, some are specialists, others, like me take pics of everything that is of interest. Which in my case, is anything and everything. So post pics AND get in on the print exchanges. I've been hesitant about the print exchanges but I'm going to take my own advice and plan on joining up on the next round.

I really like looking at the galleries and, as someone who is more enthusiastic than gifted, I'm sure I could gain much useful critique in posting some pics. However... I just can't get a worthwhile scan to upload. It might be because my scanner is not up to it, or i need to spend some more time learning to use it properly, but to spend £150 or so on a scanner, or £150 on a rodagon lens...No contest!

Still looking for a driver of an nikon LS (or LV) 8000 scanner or an epson 4990 so I can use them. (they are not mine so it would be plug scan and go. Hope the results will be okay without Photoshop (somehow my version doesn't run anymore.)

You should be able to find those drivers on the respective websites for the companies under their support area and if not there, then you should be able to find them by doing a google search for drivers, there are hundreds of websites that post driver downloads all the time.

Oh yeah, where are yours?

I've wanted to put some photos in my gallery, but have also been deterred by the poor quality I'm getting in the attempt. I'm not very good at scanning and the subsequent adjustments that must be made to make them look like the opriinals. But sometimes I think this may just be an excuse-some of the images in the gallery are great, is it because they are better to start with or because the photographer is better at processing the scans?

I always thought APUG had a good frequency of gallery postings. In the course of an evening there seems to be enough new pics to keep me interested especially when the person tell the story of when, where, how and most importantly where appropriate, the why. I enjoy reading others' comments and the dialogue with the originator. It's a great learning process.

I can only speak for my self,

I would post more images if I were mobile and could get up out of my power chair to schlep my 8x10 box up and down the hills to make new images. Since I am no longer able to get out to produce fresh new images I suppose what I have to say has absolutely no value. I have made my total living from producing photographs for more than fifty years. I have all the PPofA awards etc. and the silly degrees that to me are worthless. A person won't learn a great deal by visiting my gallery because it consists of "old historical images'
that personally I happen to like. I seldom post anymore because I no longer have a darkroom, to aid in producing prints.

So since I am not regularly producing new work, my comments and words and experiences gained over the past fifty plus years as a full time professional and have willingly shared with members of this list is according to your post is of little or no value. OK .........Yah, talk is cheap, on the internet you can be anyone you want to be, you can claim to know all the answers. But contrary to what you may think or choose to believe, there are a bunch of us here on APUG that are the real thing. We have no axe to grind, and tell it as we know it to be. Our experience was not gleaned from
a Kodak "how to book" we glanced at during a college class, seminar or two day workshop.

I don't agree with your comment about not having any value, you have many years of experience; something you can't learn from a book or reading posts on the Internet. You still have a good eye for what is good and what isn't.

"historical images" --- your personal gallery has some beautiful stuff in it ... historical maybe because they have a timeless quality.

I quite agree Jack, but I think these days you would get a bag full of scanners for £150.00. I have yet to find one in my cornflakes, but I think that day is not that far off
