Why were they clamping you down? Yes this can be a fun place but as it grows I think there is more heated debate, and more instances of flaming but for the most part those who participate regularly are some pretty good folks.

You know, I don't think I ever posted anything nasty there, but when they started banning people and culling political discussions last year I started the Underground Leica Forum. Photo.net threatened to call the FBI on me for that, since I was "stealing their business". You know, take away the kids, lock us out of the house, send me to SuperMax, register as a cyber-criminal, because a dozen people posted on a forum that lasted six months.

Of course, I do admit to starting threads like "which gun is most like a Leica?" - which was immensely popular but seemed to rankle the management. Why is it that the most popular threads (500 posts +) are the ones that get deleted? Isn't the idea to generate a lot of traffic and interest?

Seriously, welcome, Frank. I'm surprised you hadn't discovered APUG previously.

The problem with PN was that it went from a "hand off" forum that had flame wars almost every day, to a forum that would squash anything remotly controversial according to BM or BA. The problem was that neither BM or BA posted guidelines as to what was/was not allowed, so sometimes a good post would be deleted for whatever reason BM or BA had that nobody knew and some definitly bad posts would stay and go on and on and on.

IMO this was a bad move for them, they ruined their forums which was what I thought might get many of us to subscribe. Given their erratic behavior I stopped posting in PN years ago and have not missed it one bit. Heck I have not even visited the site in about a year.

As to the wich gun is more like a Leica, definitly a H&K P7 M13....loved that gun...

I didn't see that discussion, but I've seen a 1895 Krag-Jørgensen with a Leitz scope which bears an uncanny resemblance to some of the Leica prototypes

Thanks for the welcome. I sort of knew this existed, but I've always been a one wife - err... forum - at a time kind of guy... I seriously don't understand how to find the time to surf multiple forums and get any work done. So I deleted my PN bookmark ;-) Which should make EVERYONE happy.

It seems pretty smart to dedicate this forum to analog. Robb Galbraith has a good digital forum that I enjoy, and this avoids all those stupid arguements and dumb questions from digital dummies.

Welcome to APUG. It's a great place to discuss and "meet" other analog photographers...lots of great information and people. Like any other good forum, you get a few bad apples, but Sean has installed the "ignore features" (ignore subscriber or ignore thread) which allows you to pretty much miss most of the harsh stuff.

I have to say so called 'flame wars' have been very rare at photonet. There were one or two posters who were abrasive and a few who were banned. But all considered photonet is an excellant site. I've certainly had very few if any probs at photonet. I've been using photonet for years, it's probably the biggest and best general photo site on the web.

All I would say is be wary of mentioning the word digital here, APUG tends to be an anti-digital site, sadly in many ways it's become a mirror of the digital anti-film sites out there.
On balance though, it's a very good site if you are into film.

Frank, welcome to the site. As far as flame wars on photonet the Leica Forum seems to be the place where it often occurs. It is not unusual for people to be suspended/banned and threads deleted there.

I don't think that APUG is necessarily anti-digital. There are APUG forums that allow for digital posts. The very fact that APUG is the Analog Photography Users Group would indicate that the mission is to be a "safe haven" portal for analog photographers discussing various aspects of analog photography. There are plenty of forums for digital photography where general communication that is digitally oriented is better suited. A better analogy may be, perhaps, that it is less than polite to go into a French restaurant and order Chinese dishes.

Photo.net at one time was really good and I suspect that at times it still is. One large problem with it is that the software is way out of date and not nearly up to the task of managing such a large community. The size of the community is the other issue. There may not be a higher percentage of asses on photo.net but the shear number is sufficient.


This forum is excellent for what it attempts to do. I hope it does seem as bad as the worst on the net when it doesn't meet other people's agendas. That will keep the populace down to a manageable number and keep those who really would be better off elsewhere, elsewhere.

Fair enougth, and I respect and appreciate that. It's why I'm here. But generally when 'digital' is mentioned, what you get here in response is pure anti-digital bull.

Yup and that's the way it is. I do scan some of my film (the colour stuff) and print it out on an inkjet, and very nice it is too. I also scan my B&W 10x8 portfolio prints, basically to get Jpegs for e-mail and my web site. I don't try to pretend that my Jpegs ain't digital though. How silly is that.

I do have a sneeking desire to buy a DSLR, I can see the advantages as well as some of the draw backs. Not that I would dump film. It's horses for courses, it's the end result that counts etc etc..................
