Just wondering if the group would be interested in seeing the Edward Weston show at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford on Sunday, November 5th?

Gene, are you free on that day to bring a group down from Springfield?

The show got a wonderful review in Saturday's New York Times, "Art Review: Beauty and the Eye of the Photographer", I read it on-line, you might need to subscribe.

There is also an exhibit called "Shifting Terrain: Contemporary Landscape Photography", it ends on Nov. 5, and it also looks very interesting, check it out: www.wadsworthatheneum.org .

And, there is an Open Studios event taking place in Hartford the same weekend, I have a couple of photographer friends who will be showing and selling their work, just another idea to help make a day of it.

Cheers, Krystyna

Sorry, I can't do the 5th. I have to take pics of someone's kids and dog for their Christmas card. I hope it doesn't rain.

I may go to Hartford on a weekday (I have vacation time to burn). Anyone in easternish MA want to carpool?

Thanks for posting Krystyna... I think I can make the 5th. I may have young 'uns in tow, so that might limit haow many shows or open studios I can see, but I will certainly plan to go on the 5th to see Weston.

I'll be in NYC on the 4th...and if possible, might spend a night somewhere between NYC and Hartford and go to this show on the 5th. I'll get back to you.

Update

:surprised: Hi All! I just heard today that on November 5 there will be a Veteran's Day Parade in downtown Hartford, from 1 - 3 PM, they are expecting more than 50,000 people, if you were considering attending the Weston show at the Wadsworth, you might want to re-consider, parking could be a problem, since it is going to rain this weekend, I think I will go to the show tomorrow...

Cheers, Krystyna

Hi All!

I saw the Weston show on Saturday, and even though I saw this particular show two years or so ago in Dayton, it was like seeing it for the first time, absolutely worth my time, if you can make it, please do so!

I really needed a "hit" of uncomplicated, unmanipulated, straight-forward, beautiful, traditional black & white photography, and I was richly rewarded, and I found new favorites too!

If you go, let me/us know!

Atheneum Open Late & Gallery Talk on November 2

I am hoping to get to the Weston show on Thursday. The Atheneum is open late on first Thursdays of the month, and according to the Atheneum's website there is a Gallery Talk at 6:00 p.m:

Alexander Nyerges, the Director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Art and Curator of Edward Weston: A Photographer's Love of Life, will give a talk on Weston's pioneering photography.

I work only a stone's throw away in Glastonbury, so I shouldn't have any excuses for not making it!

Hi Brian!
You're east of the river and I'm west of the river in CT, but I hope to meet you at a future NEAPUG gathering, we have a great time!

Enjoy the Weston show!!

I went to the exhibit and talk Thursday eve. The exhibit is wonderful, the talk... well, if you had read the Daybooks, you could have avoided the crowd and viewed the photos in peace.
And when did Mexico become part of the U.S.??

Ansel Adams exhibit in Springfield, MA

If anybody does go to the Weston Exhibit in Hartford and don't mind swinging north 26 miles, an Ansel Adams exhibit is ongoing in Springfield's best kept secret the Fine Arts Museum at the Quadrangle. The exhibit includes 25 of his images including some of his landmark images. The exhibit was curated by the Mint museum in North Carolina. It runs in Springfield till December 17, 2006.

Dead Link Removed

The museum appears to be trying quite hard to keep this exhibit a secret!

The prints were all printed in 1980-81 as part of his museum portfolio. They do bear his late printing style.

I believe this is worth a visit, though if you had been to the MFA exhibit earlier this year you have seen most of these images.

The museum is open Tues to Sun from 11 am to 4 pm. A visit can probably be combined with a visit to the Hartford Atheneum Weston exhibit 26 miles away.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hany.

Finally, finally, finally... made it to this show!! Granted, I had my kids with me, who weren't as moved by Weston's gorgeous prints as they were by a mummy in ond of the galleries downstairs, but I'm glad I was finally able to take in this show. Too quickly, though!. If anyone else in New England or the New York area hasn't seen it, try to get ther before the 31st. Well worth the drive.

Though it was missing a few famous ones, there were a few gems that I have never seen, and I've never had the pleasure if viewing so many of his prints in person. They are extraordinary.
