Although I have thought about starting aView Camera magazine discussion group before this recent round of ugliness has made me start plans for a View Camera magazine discussion group on our web site. We wil start this foum at

www.viewcamera.com

on or about Aug. 1, 2004

We will have a panel of people ready to answer questions such as getting started in LF, lenses, pyro, view camera technique, etc.

I have not decided if this will be open to anyone or just subscribers. Any thoughts?

This new group will not tolerate the type of behavior that hasbeen repeatedly displayed on this and other forums where posters engage in character assasination and the name of the game is winning whatever the loss of civility and respect occurs along the way.

Stay tuned. More info will be posted on our web site by mid July

Steve,
Sounds like a great idea, as recent threads show increasing interest in LF and ULF from folks who were 35 and 120 shooters. Personally, I wouldn't limit it to subscribers, as you want to increase your subscriber base, and users from other forums will swell your ranks.
I look forward to the forum and your continued success.

Steve - I'd be very interested in that, but seems like I can't directly subscribe to the magazine as I'm outside the US, so if it were open to anyone it would be great.

To paraphrase Yoggi Berra..."This is deja vue all over again". Maybe this time people won't take the same critical view. Or maybe Mr. Simmons forgot what day it is. Heck, I don't know.

Please don't make it subscribers only. Us UK subscribers can't get into the 'Subscribers Only' area of the web site despite paying over $12 per issue.

Hi Steve,

I would suggest making it an open forum for 2 reasons:

1) An open forum will attract more participants which in turn attracts more traffic to your web site giving your publications exposure, and possibly increasing your subscriptions.

2) Making it private would just give ammo to your detractors.

My 2 cents,

Don Bryant

I like the idea, and I hope that the signal to noise ratio can be better than what the largeformatphotography.info forums saw this week. There really isn't room for personal attacks in ANY discussion group. I just subscribed to the magazine today (my local Barnes & Noble runs out of V.C. too quickly and I tend to miss an issue here and there), maybe my timing is good...

As a current VC subsrciber I vote for a forum open to all. That said, anyone using a view camera who is not a VC magazine subscriber should be. The magazine is a great source of timely information and also is a place to view some very fine work. The expanded articles on the website for subscribers only are a great bonus. I have not been to any of the seminars or on-site workshops, but I think they must certainly be excellent as well.

This sounds like a commercial. I better stop.

You know, the noise was also comming from Simmons, while he loves to mettle out criticism he is barely able to take it without calling it "personal" attacks.
If he wants to create a forum where everybody agrees with him so that there are no "personal" attacks, that is all well and good, but he should take some responsibility for the crap that happens around him on these forums.

I have not seen anybody do any "attacks" on this forum, so why does he post this message here if not to incite more trouble?
As they say, it takes two to tango and lets start calling a spade a spade.
Frankly, I shudder at the thought of having a "personal" forum where the "experts" are all in agreement with Simmons, but who cares?

Sorry I am coming into this a little late, as I have been on the road quite a bit as of late.

In regards to making this a "subscriber forum only" I think that is a perfectly WONDERFUL idea!

Incidently I am no longer a subscriber to VC.

Kind Regards,

Fabulous idea Steve. Yes absolutely subscriber only, and you can sit in the Attila the Hun throne and decide who's in and who's out. Ramp the price up a bit and perhaps keep some of the riff-raff out right at the git go.

John, do you get your VC from Robert White? If so, speak with them about access to the VC site - I get my password by email each month.

I'm not a subscriber to VC, but I do like the magazine. It would be nice to have an open forum for those of us who are interested in LF.

I think it should be open to everyone, as there is a lot of information out there to be shared, and might bring more people to a point where they want to try large format. By the way, I am a subscriber.

The View Camera magazine discussion forum will be up and running by Aug 2. It will be open to anyone who wants to participate with the following rule

Disagreemnts are fine as long as the post is respectful and professional. The ugly, snide, and caustic remarks too often seen in these grouips will be deleted and repeat offenders will be blocked from posting.

I think that I will stick with the extensive knowledge base, good humor, and intelligent and thoughtful discourse on APUG. Sean moderates whenever needed but I don't get the feeling that he relishes the very thought of exerting the power.
