I'm sure this has been discussed before and I believe the outcome was the environmental impact of disposing chemicals is minimal.

I've been talking to a plumber and he said that the laws have all changed and I would need to be careful what I'm throwing down the sink. So what is the current law for the disposing of chemicals?

I'm not sure how my water system is set up, but the waste will go down the same waste pipes as the washing machine/ kitchen sink with all their nasty bleaches and triclosan!

Should I inform the council? I'm about to set up a portrait business in the new tax year and don't want any nasty fines or disposal charges!

As far as I am aware, disposal of photochemicals down the drain is tolerated in "amateur" quantities, but if it is in connection with any kind of business, it would be wise to obtain a hazchem barrel from a waste disposal company and use this for your waste. It is really not a hassle, the company will bring you one or more barrels, you call them when the barrels are nearly full and the company brings replacements! Wash water can continue to go down the drain - tell the council if you want, they will then probably charge you business rates for part of your home!

Regards,

David

The fact that you are setting up a Portrait business, does not imply that you are going to develop your professional film. In fact it doesn't imply that you are going to develop film at all. Heck, most portrait studios now use "digital" methods, so the fact that you are also an "amateur" photographer that processes his own film as a hobby should not impact your situation in regards disposal. It is nice when hobby and profession can nicely co-exist.
