Ah, yes...

The irresistible attraction of the photographic machine, the light tight box that captures beauty and emits raw industrial sexuality.

Cool metal, warm wood, fetish leather and sometimes even the softly curved plastic enclose the magical mystery of picture taking, the devouring of reality, the capture of souls…

The desire, the need to capture, to own, to possess the image of a true object of desire, be it another human, a situation, a landscape, a building, the beautiful shape of a provocatively shape fruit or the elegant lines of a loftily flower.

The tool of a visual thief, a shameless piping tom, the perverse criminal of the art world.

But what makes the physical object of the camera to exhibit sexuality, what makes the machine become the object of desire?

Is it the cool metal?

The chilly feel of it when fingers run along the exposed naked metallic parts?

The elegance of exhibitionist chrome or the stealthy perversion of black paint?

Maybe it is the warmth of the wood of a LF camera, a material rarely used for a hard working tool, a material both aristocratic and humble.

It must be the leather then which sheer brutality took it from a living creature to lend its sensual texture and lines to an inanimate object.

I can speak thus of my Hasselblad.

Chrome, black leatherette and shapes of a classical era, disconnecting the object from modern times and filling the beholder with an irresistible deliciously romantic feeling.

At the same time, the bulky metallic cube look with all its weight demand respect and awe an object of such seriousness and concentration.

The “hlouts!” of its mirror, a sound both wet and dry, a loud and hard, soft and elegant sound that shocks the model and arouses the attention.

I am not sure…

But it seems that people like my Hasselblad. They respect it. The marvel at it. They desire it. Just because of its looks. Its sheer sexual appeal.

I like my Hasselblad. I like to hold it, run my fingers around its curves, operate its mechanism, load the film, click the shutter, its picture taking button, one of five only buttons.

Oh, yes, girls dig my Hassy too…

Yes, my Hasselblad its definitely sexy.

Too bad I can’t display it as casually as a sports car and carry it like a jewellery.

But I also consider other cameras sexy as well. TLRs, especially Rolleiflexes, 35mm RFs like Leicas and Carl Zeiss, MF Folders, especially the older ones and of course 4x5 field cameras either made of wood or metal.

SLRs aren’t that sexy unfortunately because of their popularity among amateurs and boring professionals.

Digitals? Well, maybe some tiny compacts, if you think small and cute accessories are sexy that is…

So, what cameras do you consider sexy? Can you say why?

Well Ari, make sure your love for your camera doesn't make stains on it in an effusion of overflowing love....

I think Leicas are the original sexy camera, the Leica III being for me sexier than the later M series (that collapsible lens that you pull out of its sheath...) with its jewel-like appearance.

TLRs in general are sexy but in a more homey fashion, like a girlfriend you love dearly and who gives you quirks and satisfaction. None of that mass-produced love.

127 TLRs have a more titillating appearance, by virtue of being a bit more flirty and light-headed.

Folding cameras are like going first base, simple and quick, yet you got your hands on some serious leather.

Reflexes are seldom sexy, but they are the weapon to go down all the way. Appearance is nothing, results is everything.

Polaroids are responsible for even more home porn than the Internet.

I like to think of the divide between box cameras and cameras with aperture/shutter controls as the dividing line between childhood and maturity. One is innocent, the other one is gravid and adaptable.

I am worried about your health. Please post your address so that I can send you a Hustler magazine and a 5 gallon pail of baby oil.

HE HE Ari uses the term sexy in a far more lighthearted manner than most of the american counterparts. If you have seen some of his pictures, such as black lace there is a raw sensuality in them, the essence of a mediterranean spirit.

While this is not the topic of this thread I don;t see why some people get alarmed by the word... no need of Hustler, me guesses that a lot of people sunbathe topless in Ari's town

For me Sexy is a camera that feels good in my hands, like I can do anything with it while providing pleasure for it at the same time.
the ZeissIkon RFs are the sexiest cameras I've ever handled, great balance, focusing and operation.
However, a Voigtlander Vitessa seems also to be an extremely sexy camera!

In the MF the Rollei SL66 is by far the camera that seduced me more and more... wish I could afford one!

Well Ari, I also own one Hasselblad, I may agree it`s a beautifully crafted and designed piece of equipment, but the bottom line is, it`s only a camera, a tool, as far I`m concerned.
Are you suffering from V paranoia?

Have nice light!

Judging by recent prices on ebay, you are not the only one who thinks that.

...

It must have bellows, though - the "Vitessa T" is nowhere near as sexy.

...

Come to think of it, I think the bellows are a necessary part of "camera sexyness" to me!

Immediately after reading this I headed for my Hasselblad to fire the shutter a few times. Then it was off for a cold shower

I had a photo instructor tell me a story once about being a nude model in college (anything to pay the bills) and it was the sound of the camera that was most stimulating to her in a sexual way.

Would that be the "clickidikick" of a 35mm SLR, the "kladaKang" of a MF SLR, or the cleaner "snickkk" of a leaf shutter?

The set-up...

The extension pops out....

The bellows glisten....

The body is poised....

The view envelops your eye...

Hands ever ready...

Then, uh, then, uh, then, uh, uh , uh, uh, oh a-g-h-h-h

oh-h-h-h-h...NOW! Yes! Oh NOW!

Of course I am talking about taking a picture...geez, is it hot in here?

LOL!

I think I'd have to say a camera in of itself isn't very sexy... Though, a pretty girl holding a "serious" camera (medium format or large format... 35mm is too common!), that would be a wonderful sight...

Maybe I should add that my Hasselblad seems to attract the girls and I was with a couple before writting this, taking pictures of one, so I do get out enough...
I enjoy a lot the looks of wonder and words of amazement that my Hasselblad draws from innocent female lips, so I thought that anything that gets that reaction from the desirable gender is sexy.

I didn't expect that you puritans would react like that!
You should leave the bible for a moment and go caress your negatives!
