Ok, I just bought some gear to do color work with. I paid $385US dollars for all of it. I don't know much yet about what I got other than it's in mint condition and 'seemed' like a really good deal.

Saunders LPL C7700 Pro Color Enlarger (almost new, even still has the protective plastic sticker on the faceplate)
Nikon El Nikkor 1:2.8 50mm Nippon Kogaku Lens (older lens but is mint)
Color Star 3000 Color Analyser (looks like it's never been used)

So,, what do you guys think? I'm not to worried about the lens I have a nice rodenstock 75, and the color star, no idea if that's a nice bonus?

The analyzer sounds kind of suspect to me. I've always considered approaches that averaged color across the frame in one way or another to be dubious. How can all images have the same average distribution of colors?

The enlarger is a good deal though, and the EL-Nikkor 50/2.8 is a good lens.

I guess I won't know about the analyzer until I try it. I was going to buy the enlarger for 385US and then he unexpectedly threw in the lens and analyzer for free.

Isn't that the analyser everybody was excited about in the other thread? The one that Jobo used to import?

Yes!, from Ed:

"I use the JOBO ColorStar 3000.* With it I have control of the process - I can measure the lot-to-lot variablity of materials and the effects of other variables (temperature is one). I would be -- well not quite --- lost without this thing, but close. They are expensive (all "expensive is relative) but the savings in materials alone - to say nothing of time and frustration - will quickly justify their use."

-this sounds promising, Sean

I use a C7700 Pro with a 50mm EL Nikkor and like it a lot. The only couple of (very minor) gripes are:

1) It'll only go to grade 4.5 which can be a bit of a pain when split grading or trying to punch up a flag neg.
2) A slanting column and a bigger baseboard would save me from having to build a shelf to mount the thing on. (Pure laziness!)

Apart from that it's a really nice unit. No gripes on the Nikkor at all.

Thanks Frank that's good to hear. I won't be going larger than 11x14 with it, probably just 8x10 at first. Also, Ed has said he will send me a copy of the colorstar manual which is very nice of him.
