I use an Ebony RW45E as a field camera and am concerned about the stability of my (generic)lensboards with a tele xenar 400 and to a lesser extent, a 210 Symmar. The boards appear to "flex" with the weight. Suggestions have been made to go to wista or linhof boards for these lenses. The expertise of this forum would be appreciated.

Ross,

I can't speak to generic boards but I do have a 240 f5.6 Nikkor (Copal 3) mounted on to a Technika board. There's no apparent flex to the board whatsoever!

The Wista boards are also very, very stable... as are the old Nikon boards. However, you don't tend to see the Nikon boards as often as you do the Wista and Technika boards on e**y.

Frankly though... I'm a bit surprised to hear that a standard 210 Symmar f5.6 lens has caused a board to flex since it's not that terribly heavy.

That said.. I'm happy with the Technika and Wista boards I use!

Cheers

Ross, which brand of boards are you using? I would be surprised if a metal lens board flexed under the weight you are mentioning? Most Linhof/Wista boards I have come across ahve been made of metal - even Ebony's own boards are metal with a wood veneer!

I'm also surprised to hear that a 210 symmar would cause a lensboard to flex. It's not a very heavy lens. I have Linhof, Wista, Toyo, and Nikon Technika-type lensboards. A Linhof lensboard will fit more precisely on a Linhof, but on another camera, they're is no reason to prefer a Linhof board over the others.

The Shen Hao I have uses the same pattern. Toyo is a good, solid board and will not flex. I would be more concerned with hanging enough weight on the camera, if the board can actully flex due to loading. Is it the board or the attachment point on the front standard which can move?

A friend here shoots with an Ebony, but due to the dryness here (R.H. now at 8-10%) his wood has become slightly smaller due to shrinkage, and there is a bit of movement with a 400mm Schneider tele in place. His becomes more stable due to the weight of the lens, extension rings and length of bellows needed to focus with this setup. There is some verticle deflection in the bed itself, but weight tends to keep things steady. tim

I've got an old Fuji 300 in a big #3 shutter. It's so big the thing is front mounted on the board. No idea who made the board but so much is cut away to hold the lens I don't think it matters. It still doesn't flex the board.
