Just wondering what the average price people are paying for mat ,frames ,and glass? Also wondering if there is a need for a new place to get your framing supplies?

I haven't found any online sellers of anti-reflective acrylic. I can get it locally, but I live in New York. I pay about $60 for an acrylic Optium Museum 16 x 20 light, and $50 for a glass Museum 16 x 20 light.

The other thing in short supply is unvarnished, plain, good quality wood frame parts. When I had space for a small workshop I made my own from oak. Nowadays, to keep my prices down, I have to compromise. I buy ready-varnished wood parts and sand the varnish off. Maybe I should go into business selling the kind of frames I like, but nobody else does. That's my usual business model - sell something that isn't available elsewhere, but for which the only demand is from me.

Mat (on both side of photograph that is in contact with photograph) HAS to be archival, otherwise it will eat your photograph very fast. Archival mat is around twice price as "normal" mat. 1mx2m plate is around $15 (with tax or wat). You cannot make it yourself so you have to buy it. However, i never saw a school for making frames, so get handy. I make frames myself however size I want (even to experiment), and cost is next to nothing. I got tools which I reuse times again, for money I pay someone else to do it for me. Glass I do not use. Hex, it can be funny to know how good they are and how low cost is. And I myself made 'em with my hands.

The reason I am asking is were are thinking about selling ready made frames and supplies to artists and would like to know what people are wanting and current prices. If there is a large enough demand for low cost supplies through mail order we will do our best to meet or beat any current price. The frames will mostly be wood (cheaper than metal) and can provide a large selection of archival mats and glass.

Framing can be very expensive, so what does one do if they want to display many photographs at the home or office without breaking the bank?

When I was working for a small yellow box company in western New York*, my boss pointed me to :

I ship off a box of photographs to him and he sends it to Plak-it [www.plak-it.com]. Plak-it mounts the photograph on wood and covers it with a filter. Then they cut slots for hanging and send it back to Frameworks. Frameworks then calls me and tells me the cost with shipping and I give them the credit card number.

Why when I live in Los Angeles would I send the photos to someone in Rochester New York rather than have it done locally? you ask. If I have it done in Los Angeles the frame stores charge $55 to $65 for a 12"x18" photograph plus tax. If I send it to Frameworks it costs $15 to 20 per photograph plus shipping and no tax. So I do it partly to save money and partly for loyality for the good service and help that they gave me.

I'm not looking for framing services I am a framer so looking for input on types and price the photo communite needs

On Monday, I had 10 16x20 mats cut to my required size window at the local Hobby Lobby for a total of $78.19 which included tax. These are not high-end boards but they are sufficient for short term display at home or at my office. I had contacted a competitor to Hobby Lobby the day before and was given the price of $130.86 for cutting 10 mats on the same board.

I buy pre-assembled aluminum frames with glass installed. I haven't bought any in so long I don't remember the price--I bought quite a few at one time so they must have been pretty cheap.
