Some of us had gotten quite used to the old Harman DPP, but now that it's gone, we're using up the last bits we've squirreled away. I'd like to hear from Simon what progress has been made in pursuing a replacement.

As an alternative, I've also heard from the grapevine that coating silver gelatin emulsion on black paper can produce a positive image, in the way that tintypes work by the silver being more reflective than the darker support underneath. So perhaps a special emulsion isn't needed, just a black paper base?

Anyway, that's my inquiry for New Year's Day 2015.

We are continuing to work toward re-introducing a product. I should be in a position to give an update very soon.

The Imago material also is limited and will run out some day.

Can't wait to hear the news as I have a full kit built around the use of DPP.

As a Japanese ATC controller said on a a nice TV series: "A perfect day is when nothing happens."
In other words, no news is good news.

There was 8x10 DPP before, I'm sure there will be again.

I also wanted to put on my personal wish-list an RC version of DPP. 'Cause I envision making impromptu portraits of people on the street, using my still-being-built Afghanistan Box Camera, and that would make the process a bit easier, not having to do the re-photographing of the paper negative to make a positive print. And FB DPP seems impractical out in public, given the lengthy rinse and dry times required of FB paper.

Is there ever any likelihood of such a product being coated on a film base? Making enlarged negatives in one step would be quite handy for a number of alternative processes - a lower speed and less sensitivity to safelighting than Ortho+ would also be very handy...

    Cheers,

    Lachlan

I look forwards to new availability - especially in 4x5 and 8x10, as those are the sizes I bought before the DPP disappeared.

Joe, my late father used to speak of street portraiture in pre-war Glasgow, Scotland, that may have used the kind of thing you seek. The photographer presumably had some kind of cover for developing or was it OK in just dim evening light and you could watch your portrait emerge in the dish? His memory of it was hazy even then and maybe it was the fix process, once partially complete that you could watch. I don't know and he is no longer there to ask. A quick rinse and it was yours for whatever the fee was. Popular on a Saturday night after the "pictures" (movie theatres) and pubs(bars) had closed.

There was some suggestion that the print did deteriorate over time.

Anyone else old enough to remember such street portraiture?

    Simon Galley:

Can you share with us a timeline for Harman/Ilford returning a direct positive paper to market? Can you discuss what technical hurdles you've encountered, if any? Those of us who've enjoy using the DPP product would like to see an equivalent return to market. And also an RC version.

    Thank you.
