Springs on the GG back

What are you folks using for these springs? I have been testing hack saw blades but they just don't seem to have the strength I will need.

Mark, I have seen someone mention that they were using butter-knife blades that they bought at Ikea and someone else mentioned using the metal business-end of putty knifes. I'll try and search around to see where I found out this info and can give you some links.

On the cameras I have built in the past, I have used stainless steel and had a shop roll them for me..

What size springs do you need? I have a bunch of them around here that came off various cameras that I have had over the years, I might have some that will work for you.

I made a pair out of the recoil spring in an old lawn mower pull start. BUT i had to double them.

Might try the LF camera maker group here, Barry Young made some really nice ones for me. Look every bit as good as some I have seen on ebay.

Find Brownell's Gun Smithing on the internet, They sell many kinds and thicknesses of "dead" spring steel to make gun springs. Camera back springs are very simple to make, and temper with a propane torch. Check them out or give them a call and tell them what you are trying to do. They have been very helpful in the past. The steels they sell are so soft you can almost cut them with a knife, they file well, drill easily and can be bent into most any shape cold. I use a jewelers saw to cut mine. Charlie.........

I am working on finding the parts to make a 5x12. If my calculations are right I would either need two that are roughly 11 inches in length at least. Or four that are 5 inches at least.

I could be way off.
