The Wyoming APUGgers have decided to have a gathering. That's right - all three of us! We'll be getting together for a week or so of photographing, flyfishing, feasting and fun in the Fremont Canyon area southwest of Casper. The timeframe will most likely center on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of June, 2007. Any of you 'foreigners' who want to come will be welcome. Just come prepared to camp and have a good time. I'd appreciate it if everyone planning to attend would notify me asap so we can get camping accomodations, etc. planned. For any of you Denver folks planning to attend we can arrange to have a 'follow me' car meet you in Cheyenne and lead you in. Just kidding!

Fremont Canyon is located southwest of Casper between Alcova and Pathfinder reservoirs. I consider it to be one of the most beautiful areas I've ever laid eyes on and one of the best kept secrets in the scenic world. I stopped by there a couple of months ago while returning from a business trip and burned off a couple of quick rolls of 35mm slide film just to give you an idea of what you'll be missing if you fail to show up. Bear in mind that it was midday and I was in a terrible hurry, so don't bother critiqueing the shots. I'm well aware of their shortcomings. They should serve to give you a decent idea of the possibilities, however. All of them were shot within a few miles of each other.

I'll post more details here as winter wears on and they become available.

Hope to see you there!

As Glenn said, you'll be quite welcome, Travis. And Dave, we'll be making a special effort to drag you away from your 'daily grind.'

Not to post opposition because if I can I’ll be there with bells on. ( I'm a wyo native) But didn't Fremont canyon get a trial by fire this last summer. Kinda looking like the gates of hell right now. Makes for great pictures but hard to camp in. I'm thinking of the right canyon aren’t I Right after Bessemer bend, the goose egg -- am i smoking something?

Nope, you have the right location for the fire, and there are some great photo possibilities there, but that's not Fremont Canyon. FC is another 20 miles past that and can't be seen from the highway. No hazard to our camping at all, but an easy 20 minute drive for charred tree shots. It's a win win.

Sweet, Sorry-- I had to ask. I haven't been down there since the fire, but plan to in two weeks. Although I'd love to confirm my reservation this early I cannot. I'm glad to see wyoming on the APUG Map.

Wyoming is a beautiful state. I will have to see if it would even be possible to get out there. But stranger things have been known to happen. And I have all these open invitations to come out to shoot from people in Montana, Utah, Oregon......

I'm having a little trouble finding information on the Fremont Canyon area (other than stuff for rock climbers). Can someone provide some links with information. Also, I read something about Pathfinder NWR, is this nearby? Thanks.

There isn't a lot of info, that's why I said it was one of the best kept scenic secrets. And yes, the Pathfinder NWR is right there. Just come, I promise you won't regret it. :D

No worries Bruce, I'll be there. I am really looking forward to this trip. I just usually try to find out as much as I can about a place before I visit. I guess I'm a little anal about it.:D

Not a problem - I have a pretty bad case of that myself. If you have specific questions feel free to PM or email me. Unless it's something you think everyone might be interested in, in which case I certainly don't mind answering questions here in the thread, either.

Not to worry. I live here and I don't know a thing about the area. I still plan to be there, though. Geeeeeez, I need to get out more.

That may be true Glenn, but Travis coming from around Richmond, VA and me from coming north of Philadelphia, PA, that is a long trip without having any idea as to what is there. :surprised: :D

Sorry I haven't updated this yet, but I plan to have more info posted on the web page this weekend.

I know it's not really in line with the nature theme, but one of the things I've been working on is arranging a photo tour of one of the larger surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin. Of those planning to attend, how many would be interested in something like this? It would take most of a day, but would provide some fascinating photo ops.

I would be interested. The massive trucks and machinery could make some great photo material. A night shoot would really be awesome but probably not feasible. Kind of an O. Winston Link version of giant trucks.

I think a tour of the coal mine would be pretty cool.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for posting the info. But, I have decided that I will be going to take photos on Oregon from May 1 to May 23 (already have the air tickets) and will not be able to participate.
