Hello, I haven't found any related post about this question.
May I use Agfa Sistan (Image silver stabilizer) on a toned paper ?
I use Agfa Viradon New and Kodak Sepia Toner

Thanks

Sistan is usually used when one wants to protect an image without toning, especially one that creates a color shift, as both of your do.

In fact the sulfite toners provide a very high level of protection.

I suppose you could use it, but the question is why?

Yes, I don't see why you would need it. The toner is already protecting the image.

All Right I didn't know that the toner is already protecting the image. Thanks for your answers.

Just to be safe I use Sistan on both toned and untoned prints the reason being that archival protection is dependent on the level of toning done. If for example a print is left in selenium toner for just enough time to increase D-MAX then the selenium will have only affected the shadow areas and not the highlights. Thus the highlight areas of the print are relatively unprotected. Along the same line I will sometimes only bleach and sepia tone the highlights meaning the shadow areas are not affected. I use Sistan as a fail safe method to protect these areas of the print that may not have been covered by the toner. IMO opinion it can't hurt.

Daniel makes a good point, one must tone to completion for archival protection.

So if you are split toning you might considered the sistan

Has anyone ever proven that sistan even works?

Or is just an urban darkroom myth.

Just asking...

Ctein has done some tests with Sistan, I know, and thinks it's a good idea to use it with RC prints, and I'd imagine Agfa and Wilhelm have probably tested it, but I suppose it's like most things that have not been around that long in that accelerated aging studies are never quite as convincing as the test of time.

I agree that combining selenium and Sistan can be a good idea. But the original poster uses sulfide toner, which apparently provides protection at very low dilutions. Combining that with Sistan seems superfluous.

Thanks David:

I always thought it was just photography's version of the hail Mary pass.
