Single Weight Fiber prints with a Nova Processor

Hey there,

I just bought a Nova Quad processor. I plan on using it for quick proof prints, and for times when I plan on returning to the darkroom the following day. (Saving the chemicals, etc).

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with using the nova processor with the fiber holder with single weight paper. Does it work?

I use a nova quad with the novaclips for fiber,works most of the time. Sometimes, into older developer and without agitation, an imprint of the waffletexture is visible. Just abit of agitation during development prevents it. Can the fibre holder be used of an ordinary quad unit?

The description I am going by is from the novadarkroom site. I figured since it said you can use fiber, you could use the fiber holder, we'll have to wait and see...

NOVA QUAD PRINT PROCESSOR with its four accurate temperature controlled slots make it the ideal choice for any printing requirement. If you are printing B&W then you can use a double fixing system or just use the fourth slot as a dip rinse. Whether resin coated or fibre papers the Quad in conjunction with standard or rapid machine type chemistry (20sec Dev - 20sec Fix) will make printing easy and fun. If you are printing RA4 colour prints from negatives the fourth slot enables the use of a dip rinse or better still use a ‘super stabiliser’ dispensing with the need for running water wash after processing. This simultaneously increases print life and print brightness by 10%. If you are printing ILFOCHROME colour prints from slides the four slots suit the process perfectly. Even R3 prints from slides such as FUJICHROME can be produced with the further addition of the Nova Rapid Wash. All in all the Quad performs all processes with ease and consistency. This model can create prints upto 16" x 12" (40x30cm).

I too have a Nova Quad Processor that comes with 2 clips. What is a fibre clip? I have used the 2 clips on fibre paper without problem. Had a problem once when I use the wrong side of the clip to clip the fibre paper. One side of the clip is slightly shorter than the other side. The short side must be on the same side as the emulsion side of the paper otherwise the paper slips.

I have a 12x16 inch Nova fibre.
It has four slanting slots. For RC paper you just use the clip as per the other processors but for fibre paper you use the paper holder. You slide the paper into position onto the holder which supports it at the bottom and holds it back at the top. With the slanted slots the paper will sit back on the holder. Then you can move the holder from slot to slot. It's a great system once you get the hang of slipping the paper into the holder. For 10x8 inch fibre I just use the clip and switch to the holder for my 12x16 paper.

You can do fibre in a big quad but it can be tricky. The fibre holder probably won't be of any use as it needs a slanting slot to work but you could try it, I suspect the paper will just buckle though. I've heard that many folks use two clips to hold 12x16 inch fibre paper and gently move from slot to slot in a quad.

You can probably adapt the fibre holder to work in the original Nova slot processor. I was the photographer who persuaded Nova to make a fibre clip and worked with them for over 2 years in helping to design and test it. The original idea was to make a clip that would work in the upright processor but we did have problems in stopping the paper from slumping downwards and came up with the idea of the angled processor. We did have a clip that worked with fibre paper in the upright processor but it was quite a fiddle to load the paper on to it and it also involved fixing the paper along each side with a clamping device.

I have made 12 x 16 fibre prints in the upright slot processor using one ot the original clips and supporting the paper along the bottom with the tube that lies in the top of the slot as it is transferred. I found this more efficient than using two clips.

This is something I have just been thinking about in the last few days. I made a call to Nova on Thursday or Friday asking if the fibre clip would work in my 12 x 16 quad and it will not. The paper will slump.

How practical was that Les? I can't afford/justify a fibre 12 x 16 quad. I wonder if two Nova clips were glued to a plastic strip, say 8 inches wide, if that would be easier in conjuction with a tube?

When I've made 12 x 16 fibre prints in the Nova Quad I used one clip placed in the middle of the top of the paper and when changing from one slot to the next I withdrew the paper while supporting the it with the tube but did not lift the paper clear of the slot, I sort of dragged it across the plastic divider that separates the slots and allowed it to slide down the next slot. It's a bit of a fiddle but it worked.
