Hi

My name is Simon and I work at ILFORD Photo / HARMAN technology in the UK, I am an APUG member and frequent the forums to hopefully help fellow APUG members with information etc, and the APUG members help me with lots of product requests and feedback etc.

I have read a few notes on threads about the Silver conference which along with Calumet we are sponsoring, to be held in Pasedena, March 3rd to the 5th. Some of the notes are negative, now thats OK, but I thought a bit of feedback from us may contribute to the debate. It seems to be mostly about the cost of attendance at $ 300 : So I just wanted to clear up a few things if thats OK, firstly $ 300 is a lot of money, no denying that, and since photography is not the cheapest activity ( or passion as I prefer to call it ) its more cost, and of course there is travel and accomodation BUT APUG members do get a $ 50 discount, so to you its $ 250

Most importantly it is a non-profit making show, designed to support and promote the whole of the photo community using traditional methods, and who intend to continue doing so, neither ILFORD Photo or CALUMET will make a cent, if we fill the venue and there is any money left over it will go back into photo education by helping sponsor or support a student on a photography course who would not normally be able to afford to attend.

We could have made it a lot cheaper by not having the number or quality of speakers, we believed that if people were going to travel to Pasedena from all over the States ( and from outside the US ) they would want to see and hear the best, we have 8 World class presenters including the likes of John Sexton and Marissa Roth , for the full details of SILVER go to www.calumetphoto.com and see the link to the silver conference, there you will find the full agenda. We also have a competition running where you can win prizes if you bring your images.

I know the effort that has been put in here ( and the people themselves) and at CALUMET to make it a great success, I am also hoping to attend, but I am committed to the APUG conference in Toronto as well, so if you go I may see you, if not, I will definitely be at APUG Toronto, thanks for taking the time to read this note. If you have any questions or feedback please reply and I will answer it or ensure it is passed on.

Simon

Thanks for posting an informative and useful explanation. I won't be able to attend for a number of reasons, and cost would certainly have been an issue, but if i were, your information would have been reassuring.

I can fully imagine the effort and expense required to put on a conference like Silver. I, for one, appreciate and applaud the intent. The amount paid by the attendees is not insignificant, but certainly commensurate to what is being offered.

I sincerely hope it is a success. I think both Ilford and Calumet should be congratulated for their continued support of silver based photography (including this forum).

Our lab is now printing submissions for your Silver Competition. We will be sending a minimum 10 different submissions. In fact we are paying the entry and shipping for our Clients if they print and matt with us.
We are calling it * CANADA GOES FOR GOLD AT SILVER.*
I wish you luck with the conference I will try to go but it will be close to our own conference and my time may be better spent here in Toronto.

If I can pull it off I would like to go. $250 isn't that bad. I've seen workshops that ask as much or more. Does anyone know how many have signed up for the conference?

I will most certainly be there. $250 is the least I have ever paid for a "worth while" workshop. (not to say there aren't those that cost less have less worth).

I believe if we want to further ourselves in any medium, education is key. It has worth and will consume resources, time, money, effort.

Here's to a great conference.

Simon,

Thanks for the information.

How about compiling the proceedings into a .pdf book or posting them on the Ilford website so that those of us who cannot afford it can see and learn about what happened at the conference?

Dear Dave,

I will pass on your suggestion to the people organising SILVER at ILFORD Photo

Simon.

An eBook and or a DVD sold online. A percentage of sales could go to those who are represented in the publication -- assuming they wish to be paid for the redistribution of their talk or demonstration and that they will allow the redistribution.

eBooks are a wonderful way to sell to a smaller market. Production of the pdf is the bulk of the cost making it financially feasible to produce and affordable to buy.

Mark my words eBooks are a natural offshoot of the internet and will only grow in the coming years.

I will be there. A good excuse to go to Los Angeles and escape Wiconsin in March. I have never been to such an event so I am eager to learn.

I am working on the theory that Feb 1 is a drop dead date meaning received.
