I know what they are, but can someone explain what system is used for Voigtlander & Leica? I considering a rangefinder camera in the future, but am confused which camera uses what. Are there problems with screw mounts? Your help will be appreciated.

Newer Leica's use a bayonet mount the older ones use screw mount. The Voigtlander Bessa's are made in two styles to either accomodate screw mount or bayonet mount lenses. Bayonet mount lenses are said to be quicker to mount than the screw type. One nice plus of screw mount is that they are self adjusting. As the mount wears you just tighten them a bit more. You cannot do this with bayonet mount and they can get a bit wobbly with wear.

You can buy an adapter to mount screw mount lenses on bayonet mount bodies.

The biggest problem with screw mount cameras is that you cannot use M-mount lenses - which rules out the vast majority of rangefinder lenses developed in the last 50 years. As Gerald says, you can use screw mount lenses on M-mount cameras with the addition of a wsimple adapter. So, an M-mount camera is more universal & is the standard mount for lenses from 5 different lens manufacturers in th epast 10 years.

I would get a bayonet mount. If you find a screw mount lens you like, it is adaptable to the M-mount with an adapter. You cannot do the reverse!

Rangefinders are wonderful I am finding, for intuitive shooting and focus is fast and easy.

Good Luck!!
