Hi,

are these lenses OK? I'll be printing b&w only and enlarging to 3X max (maybe up to 4X) in the future.

The lens I'm looking at is quite old, in a chrome body and doesn't resemble modern Schneider optics.

Cheers

Most Componons are fine. Componon-S lenses are better, and the APO Componon HM lenses are fantastic. But, for 3x enlargements, you should be pleased with a well treated Componon. My 135 Componon has the chrome barrel, too, and covers 4x5 reasonably well.

The Componon is a 6 element Gauss-type lens and is optimised for 10x enlargements. At 3x to 4x enlargements, you will get some great results. Never mind the age as long as the lenses are clean.

b&w is less demanding for an enlarging lens than colour.

I would buy the Componon S version instead. Remember this is the most important lens that you will use.

I haven't tried enlarging with one, but so far I've had quite acceptable results using a 150/5.6 Componon in a shutter to expose negatives; it also seems to be acceptable with the front group removed, as about a 265/12.5. More after I get it mounted on my Speed Graphic...

Thanks for the observations. I'll let you know what I decide.
