I'm thinking of putting together a photographic guide to the San Rafael Swell, in Utah. There is a lot of talk here about making it another National Monument (with about the same amount of rancorous debate that the creation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument created), and I figure there will be many visitors to the state, and many inhabitants, who will want to explore the area without getting into the extreem sort of hiking for which the area is known.

I'm thinking of scheduling a chat with those of you who have spent time there to get an idea of which areas you found most photogenic; which areas you found to be duds; which roads provide passenger car access to the interior portions of the Sinbad, Sid's Mountain, Cedar Mountain, the Red Ledges, access through the Reef itself, and access to the San Rafael and Muddy Creek canyons. I'm also interested in finding out about the photogenic possibilities of the wilderness areas in the Swell, as I have never hiked back into them.

The topo maps list several arches in the Swell that I've never seen, so if you have information on them I invite you to join the chat as well.

I'll be spending about a month in the area this spring, so I'm gathering data now for the weekend sorties to the area between now and the end of the semester (mid April) when I start living down there most of each week.

I invite you to join a chat this Wednesday night, 15 January (see the calendar), at 10 p.m. EST (9 p.m. CST, 8 p.m. MST, 7 p.m. PST, 3 a.m. UCT 16 Jan) to talk about nature and landscape photography in the Swell.

And to give you an idea of the type of guides I'm thinking of writing, here are examples of guides I've already written:

If Wednesday night doesn't work out too well for you, let me kow here.

There are no towns in the Swell. It's a diamond-shaped area with Green River (the town, not the river), Hanksville, Emery, and Cleveland being the approximate apexes thereof.

I guess there was a town, Wilsonville, settled and abandoned by my great-great-great-grandfather, but I'm not sure that really counts.
