Does anybody know where to get Rodinal in Tokyo? I know Freestyle has it, but they will only use ground shipping due to some kind of legal restriction (ORMD), which puts me on wrong side of the Pacific. I don't want to use a kit (e.g. Photographer's Formulary), because I have very little time to indulge in my hobby, and I'd really prefer to spend it making negs and prints rather than mixing chemistry.

Thanks in advance for any info! I've really enjoyed browsing this forum, and hope to have more time to do so someday.

HI Cliff,

Actually I bought the last 15 bottles Yodobashi camera carried about six months ago. THey said that since Agfa is dead, they probably wont have it again. There are several places in Europe that will ship it, other wise the Formulary dry chemicals are pretty much your own choice at this point. Mixing it is not that hard, just have to follow the directions exactly.

Sorry for the bad news.

You can make Rodinal the following way:

Water..................400 ml
Potassium hydroxide....20 grams
potassium sulphite.....120 grams
p-aminophenol..........40 grams. Do not use the p-aminophenol.HCl.

Add the hydroxide slowly to the water while stirring. Add the sulphite, then the p-aminophenol. Finally, add water to make 500 ml. There will be some precipitate remaining. Store at least some of this precipitate in the bottle with the stock solution. As the p-aminophenol in solution is oxidized, it raises the pH which then causes some of the precipitate to go into solution. In other words, it acts to scavenge oxygen that came in during the original mixing process and that enters each time you open the bottle.

The final brew has the same ingredients as Rodinal, less the chloride that results from removing the HCl from the paraminophenol hydrochloride that is in most recipes. The chloride has negligible effect as a restrainer, and if you think it is really necessary, you can add a little table salt to the working solution.
Photragher's Formulary might make a kit of the solid materials for you.

Is there a particular temperature for solubility, or is warm just fine?

That was you !:surprised:

Yep! It was me, I actually went to Yodobashi here in Niigata, and ask them to get all the Rodinal they could find. It was 15 bottles, and I grabbed them all! There still might be some out there somewhere, but I know Niigata, Ueno, Akihabara, and Shinjuku have been cleaned out!

Gomen nasai ne!

No special temperature. Adding the hydroxide to cold water will warm it. That's the reason for adding it slowly. Adding it too rapidly will cause local boiling.

Have you tried to see if J&C will ship their R09 version of Rodinal to Japan? Different photography sources sometimes interpret the regulations differently.

Thanks everyone for the information. Guess I'll just suck it up and mix the stuff in PF's kit.
