Dear Apug members,

Having spoken to Sean in Toronto I am pleased to announce the first ILFORD Photo / HARMAN technology Competition for members and visitors to the APUG website : This competition will not appear anywhere else:

Firstly, I thought we would keep it very simple, its usually the best way : So what do you have to do ?:

Please send direct to me ( address later ) a black and white image printed on ILFORD Photo postcard paper, it can be shot on any film stock, but the image must be made between today ( May 11th 2006 ) and the closing date, please write on the back of the entry the date on which the image was taken. If you are unable to source ILFORD Photo postcard paper, we will accept an image printed on any ILFORD Photo Paper* providing the format remains the same (approximately 10cm x 15cm) : The subject is entirely up to you and you can send as many enties as you like, all entries must be received by the last day of August 2006, please remember to post in plenty of time to reach the UK by the closing date. PLEASE NOTE : No prints whatsoever will be returned, even if requested :

If you intend to send multiple entries, it may be advisable and less expensive to send them together in an envelope.

*Any entries on other photo paper stock or ink jet prints will not be accepted for judging ( and yes we can tell ! )

The winners will be chosen in the first week of September 2006, the winners will be chosen by the board of directors of ILFORD Photo / HARMAN technology. Winners will be contacted by letter, please ensure your contact details are on the reverse of the print :

1st Prize : $ 1,500 : This is meant to cover travel and accomodation costs for the winner to attend the next APUG conference, but if you really must just have that new lens its up to you !

Runner up : $ 500 of ILFORD Photo materials of your choice shipped to your home address.

8 Highly Commended Entries : A further 8 entries will receive a signed certificate and 20 ILFORD Photo films of their choice.

IN ADDITION : If the winning image is originated on any ILFORD Photo film, this image may* be used on one of the ILFORD Photo paper range boxes or envelopes, the image will be credited to the photographer and will appear wherever in the World our paper is sold. If the winner is not on ILFORD Photo film, the runner up image would then be used if deemed suitable, if that image was not on ILFORD Photo film all of the the eight highly commendeds, if imaged on our film would be entered into a draw and chosen at random to be the published image, again if the image is deemed suitable.

* See note below FORMAT and SUBJECT :

We will arrange with APUG to show the winning entries on the APUG website after the competition has been judged, we may choose to show the winning entries, and or, a selection of the other entries at a suitable location, entry into the competition means you are willing to have your images shown and presented and used in this way, if you are not one of the 10 winners where this is obligatory, and do not wish your images displayed or used in this manner, please mark on the reverse DO NOT DISPLAY and they will not be used.

* FORMAT & SUBJECT : Whilst the subject is entirely your choice it may be worth noting our box front images always appear in the square format, you may supply a square image on the 10 x 15 cm paper if you so wish, if any winning image contains recognisable human forms model release forms would need to be forwarded before the image could be considered for publication.

All entries will have equal standing in the main competition, even if deemed unsuitable for use on an ILFORD Photo box.

Good Luck: Post your entries to :

HARMAN technology Limited,
Town Lane,
Mobberley,
Knutsford,
CHESHIRE.
WA16 7JL
UNITED KINGDOM

Marked : For the attention of Simon.R.Galley

Simon Galley : For and on behalf of ILFORD Photo / HARMAN technology Limited :

Should we mention this to people on other sites? On the one hand it would encourage new members, on the other hand the win could go to a non-member. Not that that would be a bad thing, anything which encourages the use of film and traditional enlarging is good.

Ok, off to develop the HP5 I shot today...

Andy, the answer is in the first paragraph. "This competition will not appear anywhere else."

Yes I read that. But Simon does say: 'I am pleased to announce the first ILFORD Photo / HARMAN technology Competition for members and visitors to the APUG website'

Am I reading this right?

A major photo supply manufacturer courting its customer base with a contest/giveaway? A major ANALOG photo supply manufacturer attempting to lure customers away from other major manufacturers?...be still my heart!!!

As I see it, our friends at Ilford have just come out of a standing eight count and have just thrown a bit if a jab at their opponent in the yellow trunks; I love it! This just may turn into an interesting match...(to be honest, I'm rooting for the the one in the white trunks.) With turmoil in the film market, its wise to hold yourself up as a committed leader; customers will surely take notice.

Best case scenario would be for the the match to get a little heated and generate a whole bunch of interest in analog photography. More shooters would discover or rediscover film and the major players would compete over our dollars/pounds/sheckels/euros/pesos, etc.

Bravo Ilford! Keep on fighting!

Thanks Simon, good idea. Lets hope I can buy some Postcard paper here in Spain.... You got an online store yet?

Actually I was looking at some early pics of me when I was 1 year old (1967), not only is the picture printed on Ilford paper but I am holding a box of HP4!
I guess that makes me a lifelong Ilford customer.

simon -

does the image have to be shot on film or could it be something else, as long as it is printed on ilford post card paper.

thanks!

Excellent question John! For example, could it be a unique, one of a kind photogram? Or a direct image (negative) from a pinhole camera? Now I'm getting really excited!

This is so cool!!! I was very sorry when I heard that Ilford had stopped production of the postcard stock. I have used it for years for family gathering photos. It is fantastic to hear that it is back on the market. I must ask the local photo store to order some for me.

I agree with Joey. Competitions like this could be a very good thing for "analog photography". I also salute Ilford for the novel approaches to marketing its products.

Thank you Ilford for supporting those committed to traditional photography.

Regards,
Darwin

I hope that you display them all after the competition.

And please bring us up to date on the availability of the postcard paper.

Dear All,

In answer to your questions, this is for the APUG website only, including visitors : I would not wish it promoted elsewhere: I will allow any form of photo imaging such as pin hole images, but not anything originated on a digital exposure device.

Regards

Simon

Emulsion will also have the winners included in an upcoming issue. I still want to enter, and I leave that up to Simon if at this point ethically I can enter the competition.

Great. I'm expecting my stock of Ilford Postcard paper any day now, so in the meantime I can shoot some FP4+

Now there's a choice to be made: shoot 35mm and fill the whole postcard, or shoot 6x6 so the result is prepared to be put on an Ilford photo paper box?...

Postcard paper is available from Calumet here in the US. I was at their Chicago store a couple days ago and they had just received it and were putting it on the shelves. I bought some and will be entering the contest. Thanks to Simon and Iford for doing this.

I think the tricky part of this competition is going to be finding the paper!

The only place that I can find on the Web is Calumet. Who else is carrying it?

Thanks

Justin

Same for us unfortunately. Our Ilford 'distributor' says he's never heard of Ilford Postcard paper. Though when I set an account up with them they also said 'the new Ilf WT developer does not exist and since Ilford are out of business anyway, maybe I should try something else'. I don't have much clout since I'm not a retailer and a large vol buyer. So I suspect my attempts to enlighten them have rather fallen on blind ears.

Our schools are being fed llford Multitone RC paper, or ... er ... well ... Ilford Multitone RC paper, which our distributor buys from their prime opposition in Australia!

Yes, this is Ilfords' distributor in New Zealand. They are certifiably disinterested and useless.

Sorry, touchy subject. :-(

Dear John,

I will follow this up : Simon :

As an FYI I am aware that postcard paper is not available everywhere, so you can submit a normal B&W print on ILFPRD photo paper 10cm x 15cm and post it to me
it will be included in the judging.

Kind Regards

Simon.
