Could anyone recommend books with good black and white, large format photography from mid coast Maine? I will be in Acadia National Park (Southwest Harbor, Maine) and Rockport, Maine. I am interested in landscape and macro photography of small found objects.

I have the chance to spend two weeks there this summer and I would like to learn from examples of good work in both the geographic area and two of my interests. The second week will be spent taking a landscape photography workshop at the Maine Photographic Workshops in Rockport.

Thanks for your thoughts,

John Powers

Contact the workshops and ask for the telephone number to the "Timothy Whelan Bookstore". His shop is across the street from the workshops and he only deals in photo books. I've been there and love the shop. Make sure to visit there as well. He is a great resource.

John,

You could try and find Summer Island by Eliot Porter. It contains quite a few B&W (and color) images of the Maine Coast. Not B&W but also quite good is Maine by Eliot Porter. I suspect both books are long out of print but you should be able to get them at Alibris.

Another interesting book is An Image of Monhegan - Platinum Prints by John Kleinhans. It is published by Precipice Publications 117 Ridge Drive West Hurley, NY 12491. precipice@ulster.net

I took this info from the front of the book, it may be out of date. The book was published in 1997.

Enjoy Maine. One of my favorite places on the planet.

Regards,

Paul

Thank you David.
The instructor of the course I will be taking suggested the same thing, Chip Forelli. I sent Tim an email with the same question.

Thank you Paul.
I will look for them. They sound good. I am begining to work in platinum so that has added interest.

Since some 62 members were interested enough to read this request I would like to tell you about the great books and book source I found.

As David B and Chip Forelli the Maine Photographic Workshops’ instructor suggested, Timothy Whelan is an excellent source. He offered five of the following and by chance was driving nearly a thousand miles one way to visit family in the next town to me the following weekend. I can’t promise the same service to everyone.

Timothy spent time with me on the phone. He understood exactly what I wanted and produced or suggested books that are giving me the feel of the mid Maine coast mostly through the eyes of excellent B&W photographers. They are showing me many view points of what kinds of subjects, moods and conditions I may encounter. I can hardly wait to get there.

Highly recommended.
