I'm using dreamweaver on a mac to build my website. I'm computer illiterate. That said, i've imported a photograph to use as a background image for my index page. It's in gif format from imageready. It's visible and looks perfect in the preview on Safari or Explorer but doesn't show up on my site when i upload it. The links show up as ? . What am i doing wrong?

Also, what route do you guys take when creating galleries or portfolios?
I started with photoshop and that's easy to put the images together but i'd like to know the easiest route for adding and replacing images later as well.

Did you upload the image with the page? It sounds like you uploaded the html page without uploading the image with it to the server
D.
I uploaded the page just as i have in the past. I just tried to upload the image separately as well as the index page and no luck there either.

One thing that occurs to me is that *nix based servers are case sensitive whereas Windows based ones are not. E.g. "MyPicture.jpg" and "mypicture.jpg" are the same on a Windows server but are different on Linux based ones and will give a "not found" error if you try to access the file without the same upper/lowercase characters.

Cheers, Bob.

When i upload an index page with small images i have no problems. The background image i want to use is 1600 pixels wide and saved as a gif. I made it that large so anyone viewing my site on a 20" monitor or smaller won't see the image "tiled"
It's a 2.4 mb gif file. I tried it as a jpeg at 405kb and that failed as well.

This doesn't answer your question, but get that image chaged to a jpeg. I think that even 405K is way too big, 2.4MB is completely out of line. Plus, Gif images tend to look worse, even at the much larger sizes. Gifs are for illustrations and the like, for photos you need to use jpeg.

If you send me the url I would be happy to take a look and see if I can figure anything out. I use Dreamweaver on a Mac, so I might be able to let you know how to correct things in DW.

Paul.
