Has anyone done any tests on what the capacity of Pyrocat is. I plan on using about 600ml of solution in a Jobo drum for 12 sheets of film. Is this enough, or should I go higher?

I think you are pushing it with 600, if you are using the 2500 series drum I used 1 liter and had good results.

Slightly OT:

Patrick Gainer, of vit C dev fame, recomends mixing Pyrocat part A in (very pure) alcohol without any sulfite.

For the brave at heart among you...

Jorge,

Where did you see this recommendation by Patrick Gainer?

In rec.photo.darkroom. But I may have mixed it up a bit, the thread was re phenidone in alcohol.

"Catechol is soluble in alcohol or better yet, ethylene or propylene glycol. You can make the concentrate for pyrocat-HD using automobile antifreeze, preferably the propylene (safe) type. Leave out everything but phenidone and catechol. Heat it to dissolve. It will keep a long time without sulfite, and stain is better without sulfite.

This has the advantage that if you want a non-staining developer you can add sulfite to the B solution to your heart's content. You will find that a very small amount of sulfite will produce a fine-grain developer.

Try it out with the automobile antifreeze. If you like it, you can get propylene glycol from Photo Formulary.
Wintr is coming on. You can use what's left of the antifreeze in your car."

But possibly for a test alcohol will do.

One more thing:

Re heath the propylene glycol, I've mixed a vit C dev using it. Heath it to almost to 100deg C...

Another Patrick post - I think this was the one I had in my mind:

"I can tell you that phenidone, hydroquinone, catechol, pyrogallol and
ascorbic acid are soluble in alcohols. Be bold. Make a split stock A
solution of phenidone-hydroquinone, phenidone-pyro or
phenidone-catechol. Do not use any sulfite in this solution. In fact, if
you do not use any sulfite in the working solution, you may learn
something about the relationship between sulfite and granularity that
you did not know before. You will also find out that hydroquinone is in
the same class as catechol as a staining-tanning developer. You can
borrow the Pyrocat-HD formula, but leave out bromide and sulfite."
