per kwmullets suggestion I thought I would start this thread.
I took this photo....
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)
in an old abandoned mill in downtown austin near the rail road.
Ive driven by it many times and always wanted to venture in.
I finally just stopped by and started knocking on doors of buildings near by it. its in a fairly populated area with many businesses surrounding it. so eventually I found the people who owned the old building (ironically, they run a construction business) I told them I was a photographer and loved shooting in places such as this - old decaying industrial and rural places - and that I would like to explore inside to shoot some. They asked if I would provide them prints and I gladly obliged. I was given open access and was quite honestly only limited by the three 8x10 film holders I own.
it will be worthy of a revisit in the near future for sure.

just thought I would share per the request of kwmullet

Thanks, scootermm.

I expected a much longer story filled with false starts and paranoid reactions. It's motivating to hear it was actually pretty simple to get access.

Nice place! I want to go out and find some of them, too. But I will be using them as scenery for model shoots.

OK. i'll have a go. This (there was a url link here which no longer exists) is a picture i took for my college graffitti project. It was an old abandoned car dealers and garage right in the centre of my local town that has since been knocked down to build a mini-mall.
The image was shot the Sunday before Christmas, i knew there was graffitti on the walls 'cause i could just see it through gaps in the (very high) fence. So 7.30 Sunday morning, with snow on the ground and the sun in the sky I managed to haul myself over the fence and in.
It was quite a place, so peaceful, with nothing to say I was in the middle of a thriving market town just starting to wake up. I stayed there nearly three hours, just me, the camera and the dripping of melting snow and ice. Lovely.
Most of the art was local kids so none of it was particularly brilliant but they were very prolific. I rattled off a couple of rolls then just wandered round a while.
Three weeks later it was gone.

You're very lucky to have gotten permission, usually people say "no" becasuse of liability concerns.

Here's one of my favorite sites on the web for those of us who refuse to take "no" for an answer ;-)

believe me I have dozens upon dozens of stories that dont end so easily... some involving guns, some involving angry words.... this one in particular just happened to be a very pleasant suprise.
I live in Texas, USA where well over 95% of the land in this GIGANTIC state is completely privately owned. Lots of "NO TRESPASSING" and "PRIVATE PROPERTY" signs.

if only they knew how peaceful....
