One of the most interesting web sites I've come across in a while...
[ demarchelier.net ] - that's it ... no "www", or anything. I'm going to try accessing it from this message to insure that it works.

- I'm back and editing. I had to enter the address " demarchelier.net " by hand. It worked perfectly through netscape. If anyone has any trouble with it, let me know.

Absolutely gorgeous work from one the most "significant" photographers of our time... and a sophisticated web site ... clicking on the pictures on the walls of the galleries... and really useful representations of the organization of the galleries and the presentation of the work.

Especially interesting to me were the "contact sheets", where one can scroll through them and get a feel for the sequence and posing of the models.

Give it a shot and let me know what you think.

wow ed - that is cool. i have never seem such a great place. i know some his works they are great of course but the place really gets u involved. i felt for a moment in the exhebition.

Ed, you're right it is a great site.

I have a couple of his books and enjoy his work a lot. My only rant is that it is heavily celebrity driven stuff, but at least his stuff is pretty original.

One of the books is completely "super model" stuff with the real super models not the wanna bees of today, and is very good.

I have also read that people like working with him because he isn't a prima donna like most of the other celebrity shooters. He has fun gets his shots and they go home. He has a reputation for doing fast shoots, and no ego and no bullshit.

In my opinion, he and Mathew Ralston are the two best at this stuff outdistancing Ritts and others.

Another day in the life ....

An interesting "use" for the Demarchelier site presented itself at a "Figure Study" (yeh ... nudes) session two days ago.

I was working with a relatively inexperienced, "new to me" model. The session had extended over lunch time, so we took a break and went to lunch. We resumed afterwards ... but the sheer amount of food had its effect on my innards, so I put Demarchelier's web site up on my machine, which is located next to my studio, to keep the model entertained and interested while I visited "the facility".

When we got back to work, the "tone" of the session had changed -- *wonderfully* for the good! The model had accessed the "contact sheets" and was especially interested in those of Giselle Bundchen (sp?) - her favorite model. She had "internalized" some of the posing there, and as it was with me, gained a new understanding of the "sequence" of the shoot .. and how each pose was part of a "theme" and really did not change a great deal - frame to frame ... but the "nuances" - so important - did.

I've never worked with a better model after that ... She was falling into *wonderful* poses ... much more - aesthetically "better" than if I had directed her!

One conversation:

Me: "All right - uh, now ... kind of `twist' to the right ..."

Model: "You mean like this?"

Me: "No. But - hold it!" Trip shutter, trip shutter, trip...

Me: "Uh ... Don't pay any attention to the guy behind the camera..."

What had started as a "very good" session had morphed into an **exceptional** one - and I think it was because of Demarchelier's site.

I consider that site to be one of the best, most effective teaching experiences - for both photographer AND model - I've encountered yet!

To the darkroom. Eleven (11) rolls of 120 - black and white and color to develop!!!

I *love* photography!!
