Maybe some of you will remenber, Andrew Moodie recently asked for advice for a decent P&S camera and I recommended a Ricoh R 35, for several reasons.
He could find one now and I am sure it will serve him well for the intented purpose.
I had been in Paris recently, and as always in June it was hot and we had to walk and walk and walk all day long, or stand in the steamy Metro,we spent partly 10 hours per day on the feet. This time I did not feel like luggin around anything like a "real " camera , even a Bessa in a halfcase felt too heavy and too big.
I took the R35 this time, which fits well in the breast pocket of my shirts, so I had nothing hanging around my neck or to carry in my right hand.
Different from the former visits I had not planned any kind project for this vacancy, I wanted just some B&W photos en passant.
I must confess I did not feel well at first, leaving the Bessa in the hotel during the day, hoping I would not have to shoot the "photo of my life" with that little plastic machine. "Be always prepared", isn't that the credo which lets us lug always much more stuff than we really need ?
Some of these shots are up now in the Paris 2006 album at Timeless Travels
All daylight shots are R35 +Yellow filter + FP4/Tri-X/BW400CN, and as it seems I haven't missed anything, the "shot of my life" did not come anyway.
This experience of liberation made me thoughtful , obviously sometimes even a minimalist like me needs less machinery than he assumes, at least as long as the type of the camera is perfectly focussed on the intentions and environments ? Strange but true, the longer I used it the more I enjoyed it !
The night shots btw are done with the Bessa +Nokton 50mm + Skopar 25mm and Fuji 1600. I needed the Noks speed and narrow DOF in this case.
