I just made my first Pt/Pd test prints last night to get my base exposure. I am now preparing to print out an HSL array, followed by some ChartThrob step charts and then on to some digital negatives.

I have a question that I haven't seen addressed (apologies for missing it if it has): It's clear that there is a particular side on which to print with the Pictorico OHP. This side effectively becomes the emulsion of the digital negative. It's normal to contact print with the conventional film emulsion in contact with the paper for maximum acutance. So that would mean that all the charts, and the negatives, would need to be flipped (mirror image) prior to printing on OHP. Yet I haven't seen any metion of this in the tutorials.

Did I miss the instructions? Is it supposed to be implicit that you flip the images? Or am I wrong in assuming that folks contact print the diginegs with the ink side touching the paper?

Thanks

Richard

Richard,

Most people print with the ink/emulsion side of the OHP facing the sensitized paper and do indeed flip the image before printing the negative. You can do this by rotating it horizontally, or the application may have a print mirror image somewhere in the dialog boxes.

It is especially important for best detail that you print ink side in contact with sensitized paper with an OHP like Pictorico that is very thick. If you print base to sensitized paper you will lose some sharpness.

It also depends on the process you are using your digital negs for.
In the case of direct printing, as Pt/Pd or on silver paper, you would need to flip the image. In other processes like single carbon transfer, you would not have to flip it since it will be reversed during the transfer process. Depending on the process you use probably explains why it is not generally mentioned.
