I recently returned from a New England APUG workshop and it turned out to be a great event. As a result of somer of my posts, I have gotten a few responses from NJ/PA APUG members looking to get something going in our area.

I live in western NJ (Hunterdon County) close to PA and not too far from NYC and other parts of that state. I would be willing to help get something going as far as an active group is concerned. I cqan set up an event here in Hunterdon at a local mill complex that is suitable for good LF and other format photography. Maybe do something in May.

If there's any interest, let me know. I am not looking to step on anyone's toes who may have already started something, but am willing to coordinate.

PM me to express your interest. If you shoot LF, I would like to know.

Thanks,
James

James,
A Mid Atlantic APUG group was formed recently and can be accessed in the Regional area. You may be a bit too far North for it. Have you checked out the Regional groups that are listed there?

Bill

Hi James,
APUGers in the NYC area have had 3 events that I know of. Two print meets at David Goldfarb's apartment and a day long shoot in Asbury Park. I didn't count, but we had at least 12 people there. Do a search on Asbury Park and I'm sure you'll find the thread planning the trip.

I'm sure we would love to get together if you can arrange it.

Take care,
Tom

I have gotten a few responses so far, actually enough to make me think I should plan something. What I am thinking about is a shoot at the Prallsville Mills complex in Stockton, NJ. It is part of the state park system, but is run by the Delaware River Mill Society, a non-profit organization, and I am a member of that organization. I became a business member so I could use the mill facilities, both inside and out, to photograph models. The administrators have been wonderfully cooperative in letting me have access to the facilities.

My idea is to meet at the mill and photograph outside. There are numerous 18th to early 20th century buildings in the complex, all suitable for good photography. The Delaware River is right there, as well as the Delaware and Raritan Canal. At the end of the day, we can decide if we like the location well enough for me to plan something bigger and more involved and arrange to use the inside of the mill for presentations, demonstrations, and displays. There are a lot of possibilities there. If we do go to a big program where we book the mill for an all day, or two day, event, then we would either have to pay them or make a donation. Since this is well into the future, I am not even looking into that yet.

Again, member interest will determine what we do and how involved it eventually becomes. Just let me know what the interest is.

NJ Meet

I am in Norther NJ, closer to NY than anything else. I am sort of interested in something like this. A day of shooting in a park is probably not of much interest to me, as most of my work is portraits, and usually of people I know well. Often I use studio strobe.

The NE event they just had was interesting to me, just a little far away.

I would be very interested in print viewings or opportunities to sit and kibbitz about LF shooting, darkroom, gear, etc.

My 2 cents. YMMV.

Hi Neal,
I would see no reason why we cannot combine a portrait session with some architecture and landscapes at the mill complex. There are plenty of areas there very suitable to portraits either under the open sky in shadowed areas or inder cover as there is an open air shed. The shed also had electrical outlets if there is a desire to bring strobes.
Please stay active in the thread for updates.

Sounds good to me, I just need to know a date well enough in advance so I can block out the time.

Is this LF specific? It sounds like the type of photographing I do,
but I use MF.

...he did say "and other format photography". Quite often, I'll bring my Bronica gear along when shooting large format. There are times when shooting 6X6 makes the difference between making photos and just looking at the local scenery!

Thanks, Bob, for answering JJC's question. I trhink any APUG member should be welcome to any APUG event. If it's a LF shoot and someone wants to shoot MF, that's fine. Maybe there is a future convert in the mix. Remember... film rules.

I contacted the Delaware River Mill Society asking which weekends would be busy with events at the Mill. I don't want to plan anything that will conflict with anything going on there at the time. When I hear back from them I will propose a date.

Rural Hunterdon County presents a lot of photo opportunities. Within five miles of the mill there are literally hundreds of places for good photography. I would suggest that we begin at the Mill and photograph as much as we want to there. There is enough for a full day of shooting at that location. If anyone gets antsy, I can direct them to other locations.

There are three places to eat in Stockton, but if there's interest, I can arrange to have a lunch wagon come at noon to one o'clock if there is a concern about having to pack up equipment and set up again after lunch.

Keep posted for future updates.

Here's an update on dates available for the Mill complex in May:
Sunday, 14 May
Sunday, 21 May
I can ask about June dates if these dates do not work out.

There's already a New Yrok and a Mid Atlantic which goes from Trenton to the NC border and out to western Md or so, I guess.

I'd be happy to join you on either Sunday. (I'll ask my wife to put our envelope in the collection basket...hehe)

Sorry to hear that, Bob, but business comes first. Do you have any open dates for June if we wanted to plan anything then?

Whatever I organize, it's going to be a 9 to 5 deal with optional dinner close by. So, it will be a "Come for as long as you can" deal. Easy, flexible, and fun...
